Wrestling: Wolves place 10th at PA’s Axe tourney

Sequim High senior Cayden Beauregard developed the new move in practices, but “naming rights” would go to the first SHS wrestler to use it in a match.

On Saturday afternoon at Port Angeles’ Battle of the Axe tourney, Beauregard made it happen en route to a pin against Camas’ Khailan Chan.

“It’s ‘The Baby Bomb’,” the Sequim teen said following the match.

The pin helped highlight a mixed weekend of results for the Wolves, who wound up going 2-3 and placing 10th in the 16-team tourney on Jan. 6 — though a different result in an individual match or two could have seen Sequim finish in the upper half of the standings.

“We’ve got a lot of inexperienced guys but we’ve got a fair number of competitive guys,” Sequim coach Steve Chinn said.

“They’re making positional mistakes — it’s not technical (mistakes). We can’t finish our moves.”

Sequim opened with a 42-26 loss to league foe Olympic, then beat Foss 44-31 and fell to 1-2 in pool play after a 61-17 defeat against Camas — the eventual tourney champion.

In the second half bracket, Sequim beat Port Angeles 58-16 and fell to a tough Washington squad, 42-31.

Beauregard, ranked No. 4 in the 113-pound weight class, went 4-1 with three pins and a forfeit win — his lone loss coming in what could be a preview of a district title match when he fell 7-6 to Daniel Herrera Sanchez, albeit up one weight class (120).

Jayms Vilona had a strong day for the Wolves at 144 pounds, going 4-0 with three technical fall victories. Brother Johnny Vilona was 3-2 with a pin at 132 pounds.

James Smith (157 pounds), Roger Burwash (165) and Ari Skov (175) each went 3-2 for the tourney with pins in each of their victories. James Mason (150) and Dylan Bowen (190) also earned three wins, with two of Mason’s coming by pin. Ryan Spelker (120) tallied two wins at 126 pounds.

Sequim was hampered in team scoring without wrestlers in the 132- and 285-pound weight classes; they competed in some matches with reserves from other squads.

“One of our goals here was to hang in there, not give up pins,” Chinn said. “We had many kids come back to get pins (in their matches).”

Camas took first, Silas second, Klahowya third and Fife fourth at the Port Angeles tourney. Forks took fifth, Port Angeles was 11th and East Jefferson was 14th among the local teams.
