A tough loss under the lights to a league rival and a one-run heartbreaker has Sequim’s Wolves still searching for their first league victory.

Sequim’s offense was hot early but Port Angeles hurlers shut down the Wolves after the first inning in a 6-2 Roughrider win at Civic Field on March 28.

Brady Shimko and Brody Merritt combined to shut out Sequim after a two-run first inning under the lights at Civic, and after tying the game at 2-2 in the fourth, the Riders — whom Sequim pitchers held to just five hits for the game — erupted for four runs in the fifth inning to take command of the game.

Sequim’s committed four costly miscues as Wolves starter Johnnie Young was charged with four unearned runs. He gave up four hits and six total runs over five innings, striking out five Riders.

Joey Oliver tossed a scoreless inning of relief.

Young was hot with the bat as well, cracking a pair of doubles and driving in a run. Michael Grubb was 1 for 3 with an RBI.

Merritt struck out six Wolves in three scoreless relief innings.

On March 29, Sequim starter Ian Miller tossed five scoreless innings and Wolves pitchers held Kingston to just four hits, but Kingston sophomore hurler Jack Hermanson was even better, throwing eight innings of two-hit shutout ball with nine strikeouts as the Bucccaneers edged Sequim 1-0 in eight innings.

Hermanson gave up a double to Johnnie Young and a single to Oliver but was otherwise perfect. Miller and reliever Michael Young matched the Kingston ace until the bottom of the eighth, when Kingston pushed across a run on a hit and two walks.

Looking ahead

The Wolves are off for spring break and are back in action April 11 when they host Bremerton (0-2, 3-3). Sequim is at Olympic on April 13 before hosting Coupeville on April 16 and North Mason on April 18.
