Girls soccer: Wolves shut out Chimacum for first win

Following a one-score heart-breaker against the league leaders last week, Sequim rebounded with a much-needed victory — their first of the season.

Daisy Ryan scored the first of five goals in the Wolves’ 5-0 shutout of Chimacum on Sept. 20.

Ryan opened the scoring in the first half after the Cowboy keeper bobbled the ball. The score stayed 1-0 until halftime.

“The girls came off at halftime with a one-goal lead but did not feel they deserved the goal and were found wanting in that half,” Sequim coach Derek Vander Velde said. “(They) went into the second half hungry and ready to dominate and that’s exactly what they did.

Ryan scored to make it 2-0, Abby Schroeder added a scoring shot from the 18-yard mark, Yana Hoesel had a bounding score from a corner kick and the lefty Hope Glasser went right-footed kick from six yards out for the final score.

The victory helped Sequim (0-4-0 in league, 1-51-1 overall) recover from a 1-0 loss at North Kitsap two days prior.

”It has been a struggle the last few weeks with so many close games,” Vander Velde said. “The girls really played well. They found a solid tempo and a rhythm to game which they had not done before.”

The Wolves were scheduled to host North Mason on Sept. 25 — results were not available at press time. Sequim is at Kingston on Sept. 27 and Port Angeles on Oct. 2 before hosting Bremerton Oct. 4.
