Men’s basketball: Pirates get sweep in annual ‘Classic’

Peninsula’s men held court at their own 2016 First Federal Pirate Classic mini-tourney, knocking off West Division foes Green River on Dec. 3 and Grays Harbor on Dec. 4.

Making their season home debut against Green River on Saturday, the Pirates (4-2) got double-figure scoring from five players as they turned a close halftime score into a 82-76 victory.

Alex Baham led PC off the bench with 15 points, sinking all five of his 3-point tries. Trent Warren had 12 points while Kevin Baker, Darrion Daniels and Omar Lo added 10 apiece. Sam Velez kept the boards clean with 12 rebounds and Cole Rabedeaux had seven assists.

Gator Cole Luckett led all scorers with 24 points. Green River fell to 1-5.

A day later, PC jumped out to a 13-point lead at halftime and rolled to a 92-76 win against Grays Harbor’s Chokers.

Lo led all scorers with 23 points and added 10 rebounds, and Daniels added 22 points, six steals and six assists.

John Robinson led Grays Harbor (2-3) with 22 points.

The Pirates earned the sweep after coming off a split at the Skagit Valley Turkey Tournament, held Nov. 26-27.

In the Nov. 26, 78-65 win over Portland, the Pirates bolted out to a 28-8 lead in the first half and rolled on to victory.

Warren lead four players in double figures with 18 points, Rabedeaux hit for 14, Lo added 13 points and seven rebounds, and Daniels chipped in 12 points and four assists.

Velez led PC rebounders with eight.

Alonzo Parnell led Portland with 14 points off the bench.

On Nov. 27 against Elite Prep, the Pirates came up short 68-64, outscoring the prep school team from Bellevue 36-26 in the second half to close the gap after trailing 42-28 at halftime.

Rabedeaux led the Pirates with 19, Warren had 13 points and seven rebounds and Daniels also scored 13.

Michael Carter led Elite Prep with 18 points.

Looking ahead

Peninsula hosts Wenatchee Valley on Dec. 10 and plays at Blue Mountain (Pendleton, Ore.) on Dec. 11.

The Pirates play at the Highline Crossover tourney, set for Dec. 16-18. PC is scheduled to play Highline on Dec. 16, Yakima Valley on Dec. 17 and Chemeketa on Dec. 18.
