Sequim helps win first league girls-only meet

Lady Wolves wrestlers helped win a milestone match-up at the first Olympic League Girls Dual Meet on Dec. 15 at Sequim High.

As part of the North squad, Sequim and its teammates won 36-30 with Sarah Ulmer, 190 pounds, winning the decisive match with a pin of North Mason’s Ashlee Johnson in 1:51.

Three more Wolves won their matches by pin including — Kiara Pierson, 125 pounds, pinning Angel Collins of North Kitsap in 1:05; Aylee Bennett, 145, pinning Summer Blackwell of Olympic in 3:02; and Alma Mendoza, 155, pinning Cynari Green of Bremerton in 3:10.

Sequim’s Megan Puksta lost narrowly 14-13 to North Mason’s Marissa Covarrubias at 120 pounds.

Alexi Rampp-Taft, 120 pounds, was Sequim’s lone winner in JV match-ups pinning Klahowya’s Jenna Adams in 1:06.

Sequim coach Bill Schroepfer said the event was a success as they had enough participants for all but two weight classes, 100 and 235 pounds, at varsity and most of the junior varsity matches.

“Our girls never get to face each other in dual meets,” Schroepfer said. “They have to wait for tournaments or face boys. This gives them a chance to wrestle under the big light. We even have state finishers who never get a dual match.”

Sequim athletic director Dave Ditlefsen said the tournament will continue either again in Sequim or at another Olympic League school that wants to do it.

“We’re happy to host it and willing to host it in the future if needed,” he said.

“This is great to support girls wrestling. It helps them get the experience they need.”

Aylee Bennett (145 pounds) also tied for fifth, earning a pair of quick first round pins — Helen Zhou of Bellevue in 25 seconds, Sarah Brewer of Kelso in 21 seconds — to go 2-2 overall.
