Auction, films to raise funds for Snap

For an evening, they ask for help. The next night, they are stars of the big screen.

Members of Snap, an organization that serves individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, hosts a pair of events this weekend created to aid their constituents and enlighten the public.

The weekend kicks off with "An Affair to Remember," a silent and live auction slated for 6:30-9:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 15, at Sunland Golf & Country Club, 109 Hilltop Drive.

"The community has been really generous," said Snap board member Tracy Wilson. Among the items up for bid is a player piano and nights at area B&Bs.

The event features appetizers by the Kokopelli Grill and wines from the Northwest.

That’s followed up by the "Sprout Film Festival: Making the Invisible Visible," set for Saturday, Oct. 16, at the Port Angeles High School auditorium, 304 E. Park Ave.

Films show at 10 a.m.,

1 p.m. and 6 p.m.

The films show real people living full lives despite the difficulties they bear: Down syndrome, autism, Asperger syndrome and often, society’s assumptions.

"They’ll make you laugh, they’ll make you cry," said Wilson. She credits new executive director Jenell DeMatteo with creating the film festival.

"She’s now been here a year. She was very familiar with Sprout when she arrived," she said.

This free event features the Sequimarimba band, appearing at 3 p.m.
