The Andy Mackie Music Foundation Family Music Festival and Scottish Highland Games takes place from 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 4; noon-
8 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 5, and noon-5 p.m. Monday, Sept. 6, at Memorial Field in Port Townsend.
Mackie’s annual music festival, silent auction and Highland Games event take on a greater significance this year as Mackie prepares to move closer to his family in Michigan. The festival features a marathon of local artists and young performers, along with opportunities for families to build their own stringed instruments.
Featured young performers who have benefited from the foundation include Kennedy Johnson on guitar and vocals, Sam Hobart on guitar and fiddle, Sam Jasper on mandolin and fiddle, Carlos Burelson on guitar and vocalist Heather Moreland, a recipient of foundation-sponsored vocal lessons.
A portion of the funds raised from sponsorships, instrument kit sales and auction proceeds will go to Habitat for Humanity.
The Andy Mackie Music Foundation, which has operated under the umbrella of a local organization, has applied for nonprofit status as part of his effort to spread the programs across the country.
