City dedicates alleyway

City of Sequim officials and Brown Maloney, owner Olympic View Properties, held a dedication of the finished alleyway on Friday, May 6. The alleyway between Washington and Bell streets from Sequim Avenue to Second Avenue was redone from October 2010 to January 2011.

Maloney and the city entered into an interlocal agreement to install 660 feet of new 8-inch water main to replace old 2-inch galvanized water line. Workers replaced 12,3000 square feet of roadway, too. New stormwater drainage prevents water from entering businesses on the north side of the alley.

City Manager Steve Burkett admitted it was unusual to dedicate an alleyway but this was a good example of property and business owners partnering with the city. City councilors are looking to approve Sequim’s Downtown Plan in which alleyways like this could be incorporated into for more pedestrian travel.

The city contributed $175,000 toward the alleyway project, which cost just over $250,000.
