The Sequim Education Foundation board of directors recently honored Melissa Karapostoles and Annika Lawrence for their service as student representatives.
The foundation appoints representatives from Sequim High School and Sequim Middle School to the board of directors to ensure the student point of view is considered in all the planning and decisions.
Lawrence served on the board during the 2008-2009 school year. She is attending high school next year so her position is to be filled with a middle school student.
Karapostoles has been on the foundation board since 2007 and she plans to continue for her final year in 2009-2010 as the foundation’s high school representative.
The all-volunteer unpaid Sequim Education Foundation board of directors is made up of nine elected citizens, the superintendent of schools, a member of the Sequim school board and the student representatives.
Student representatives have an equal vote with all other members of the board so they must be prepared to consider all foundation business matters, from planning fundraising events and determining investment strategies to making grants awarding scholarships.
"It’s like serving on the board of any large corporation," foundation president Dick Hughes said. "These young people must come prepared to ask intelligent questions and make good decisions at every meeting."
