Five-car accident shuts down US Highway 101

A five-car collision near Barr Road closed U.S. Highway 101 for 35 minutes Saturday afternoon, sending one person to Olympic Medical Center.

The Washington State Patrol said in a news release that a mail carrier was eastbound on Highway 101 making a left turn to a mailbox when a second car, also eastbound, rear-ended the mail carrier’s vehicle when it failed to slow down.

Officers said Juan Ruiz, 54, of Forks, was driving the second car.

Officers said the mail carrier, driven by 35-year-old Marsha Soloman of Port

Angeles, was pushed over the center line and broadsided a car driven by Shengyi Liu, 54,

of Sammamish, who was traveling westbound.

Liu’s car crossed the center line and struck an eastbound car driven by William Green, 62, of Port Angeles, officers said.

Liu’s car was then rear-ended by a car driven by Brian Monahan, 54, of Forks, officers said.

Ruiz suffered neck and back injuries and was transported to Olympic Medical Center, officers said.

No one else was injured in the collision.
