Race for the Cure honors Mariner, police officer

Seattle Mariner’s Hall of Famer Seattle Mariner Edgar Martínez and his wife, Holli, will be the honorary co-chairmen of the 2009 Komen Puget Sound Race for the Cure at Qwest Field on Sunday, June 7. Seattle Police Department lieutenant and breast cancer survivor Robin Clark will be grand marshal and last year’s leading children’s fundraiser Adam Westerman will be grand marshal of the Kids’ Race.
Martinez and his wife donate countless hours and resources volunteering and he was inducted into the World Sports Humanitarian Hall of Fame in 2007. Last year, they founded The Martinez Foundation to provide underserved populations with educational opportunities.
Clark was diagnosed with breast cancer in September 1997, eight days after her 39th birthday.
"When I was diagnosed with breast cancer, I was at the healthiest time of my life and I didn’t fit any profile of what I knew a breast cancer patient to be," said Clark. "I’m so honored to be named grand marshal of the Race for the Cure and continue to spread the message that it’s important to be aware of breast cancer at any time in our lives."
Westerman, a sixth-grade student, supported his mother as she battled cancer last year. He was the highest youth fundraiser for the 2008 race.
The 5K or 3.5-mile run-walk starts and finishes at Qwest Field. It kicks off with a Survivor Breakfast and Kids’ Race and ends with a parade to honor those who survived breast cancer and remember those who have not.
Entry fees are $30 for adults, $20 for children 6-12, $10 for children 5 and younger or $35 for Sleep in for the Cure. To register or learn more, visit www.komenpugetsound.org.
