Five Acre School adds middle school grades

Five Acre School is adding a full middle school (grades 6-8) for the 2013-2014 school year.

Previously the school served preschool through sixth grade.  

Interested parents and students — along with those already enrolled — are invited to an informational gathering at the school, starting at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 27, at the school campus, 515 Lotzgesell Road, Sequim.

Enrollment for the middle school is open to students from throughout the community, preschool through eighth grade.

The Five Acre Middle School builds on the Five Acre School value of “educating the whole child and its educational paradigm of the student-centered curriculum,” school officials said in a press release.

The curriculum features project-based learning, assessment, fine arts and music, and emphasizes personal responsibility and social competency, officials said.

“One of the goals unique to the Five Acre Middle School is to use the students’ learning to teach others so that their academic work has meaning and value to the larger world,” middle school teacher Tom Harris said.

Bill Jevne and Juanita Ramsey-Jevne created the school in 1995 and saw enrollment grow from 10 preschoolers and kindergartners to an 80-plus-student education center teaching children through sixth grade. Brian Walsh and Autumn Piontek-Walsh bought the school in late 2012; Piontek-Walsh is now the school’s director.
