Book sale at library …

Friends of Sequim Library will hold its monthly book sale from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 8. The sale site is behind the Sequim Library at 630 N. Sequim Ave.

This month the sale collection includes children’s books, art, cookbooks, cookbooks, cookbooks, handwriting analysis and travel writing.

All funds raised provide the library with the ability to run programs for both children and adults, including the Summer Reading Program.

… but library parking lot closed the next day

The Sequim Library parking lot will be closed for repairs beginning at 6 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 9, and remain closed until 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 10.

During this time, access to the library’s book drop also will be closed.

This temporary closure will take place during hours when the library is regularly closed and no interruptions in library services are anticipated. The library will reopen at 10 a.m. Monday.

John Wayne named to Sequim Masons

Members of the Sequim Masonic Lodge No. 213 posthumously elected John Wayne, a Freemason, an honorary member of the local lodge on July 9 for his “exceptional service to Masonry” and “contributions he has made to our Dungeness Valley” including donating land in 1975 that went on to become the John Wayne Marina.

Local masons say this is believed to be the first honorary membership of its kind in Washington State Masonic history.

OUUF celebrates women

Olympic Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 73 Howe Road, Agnew, presents a service about “Celebrating Heroines” at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 9.

The OUUF Choir, under the direction of choir director Joel Yelland, will present songs and stories of Eleanor Roosevelt, Elizabeth Warren, Marie Curie, Sojourner Truth, Susan B. Anthony and Jane Goodall, plus others. For more information, call 417-2665.

Planning commission may amend marijuana code

The Clallam County Planning Commission meets at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 5, at the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles.

The agenda includes a public hearing of an ordinance request to amend the Clallam County Code, creating a new chapter titled Recreational Marijuana, allowing indoor state licensed recreational marijuana producers, marijuana processors and marijuana retailers.

Jam with your salmon?

The Sequim Guild will be selling homemade pies, jams and jellies at the Sequim Rotary Salmon Bake on Aug. 9 at the Boys & Girls Club, 400 W. Fir St., Sequim. All proceeds go the the uncompensated care fund at Seattle Children’s Hospital.

Youth plane rides set

EAA Chapter 430 hosts its third Young Eagle Rally, set for 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, at the Sequim Valley Airport. Young aviation enthusiasts (ages 8-17) should bring their parents/guardians along for permission’s sake for free airplane rides.

In case of inclement weather, the rally will be postponed to the following Saturday (Aug. 22).

Class of 1960 get together

The Sequim High School Class of 1960 will have a get together at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 14, at Judy Gordon Smith’s home. For details, call 683-3514 or 582-0100.

Meeting on pollution project

The Clallam County Department of Health and Human Services, Environmental Health Section, will hold a public meeting from 6:30-8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 12, at the Dungeness Schoolhouse, 2781 Towne Road in Sequim.

The purpose for the meeting is to present information about the upcoming pollution identification and correction (PIC) pilot project, which will be conducted in the lower Dungeness watershed.

Rotary sponsors blood drive

The Rotary Clubs of Sequim sponsored blood drive, in conjunction with Bloodworks Northwest, will be held at the Sunland Golf & Country Club, Sunland Clubhouse, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday, Aug. 21. (closed for lunch 1:45- 2:45 p.m.) Appointments are available and walk-ins welcomed between appointments.

Walkling trust accepting applications for grants

The Ben and Myrtle Walkling Memorial Trust is accepting applications for grants to be awarded in 2016.

The trust awards grants to encourage new civic and charitable projects to benefit citizens of Port Angeles and Clallam County.

For applications, send a self-addressed, stamped envelope to The Ben and Myrtle Walkling Memorial Trust, PO Box 1588, Port Angeles, WA 98362. Submit completed applications by Sept. 30.

Myrtle Walkling, who died in 1992, created the trust in her will and funded it with more than $1 million.

ONF seeks project proposals

This year’s deadline for accepting Title II project proposals for Olympic National Forest has been extended until Aug. 31.

Title II projects must provide a direct or indirect benefit to resources on National Forest System lands.

Title II project submission forms are available on Olympic National Forest’s website at www.fs.usda.gov/detail/olympic/workingtogether/advisorycommittees/?cid=fsbdev3_049547.

Hard copy forms are available at the Supervisor’s Office in Olympia. Completed forms may be submitted electronically to dnemeth@fs.fed.us.

Hot Springs Road to close

The Elwha Valley’s Olympic Hot Springs Road will close at the Olympic National Park boundary for approximately one month beginning on Tuesday, Sept. 8.

The temporary closure will allow the park’s maintenance crew to make necessary improvements to protect the road before the fall and winter rains arrive.

The 4.5 mile Whiskey Bend Road also is scheduled for repair this fall.

This road was extensively damaged last winter and has been closed to vehicles ever since.

Dates for this project have not yet been set and will be released as soon as they are available.

Prayer breakfast planned

The 2015 Clallam Leadership Prayer Breakfast will be from 6:30-8:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 9, at the Sequim Community Church Fellowship Hall, 950 N. Fifth Ave., Sequim.

Lt. General Larry D. James (Ret), deputy director and COO of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory will be the featured speaker.

New grief support group starts

A grief support group meets from 1:30-3 p.m. the first and third Tuesdays monthly at Sequim Community Church, 950 N. Fifth Ave., Sequim. This is an open drop-in group and free of charge. Contact Paul Fiorini, bereavement coordinator at Assured Hospice, at 582-3796 with questions.

Senior Nutrition menu set

Sequim Senior Nutrition Site menus are served at 4:30 p.m. at the Shipley Center, 921 E. Hammond St. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Suggested donation is $5 (60 and over), $8 guest and a 24-hour advance reservation is needed.
