Flags dedication set

The Carlsborg VFW & Sequim Museum & Arts invites everyone to a Veterans Gathering at 544 N. Sequim Ave. for the Cavalcade of Flags Dedication at 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, to honor all individuals who served their country.

‘Free days’ at state parks

The Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission wants the public to know that Tuesday, Aug. 25, is a state parks “free day.” Day-use visitors will not need a Discover Pass to visit state parks.

The “free day” is in honor of the 99th birthday of the National Park Service, which was established on Aug. 25, 1916. “Free days” apply only to day-use visits with vehicles, not overnight stays or rented facilities.

Washington State Parks will have two more “free days’ in 2015: Sept. 26, in recognition of National Public Lands Day, and Nov. 11, in honor of Veterans Day.

Vendors sought for Sept. 12 church garage sale

Olympic View Church of God is hosting its 4th annual Outdoor Flea Market from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12. A wide assortment of vintage and handmade goods will be available in the various booths. All vendors are welcome.

Spaces are $20 for a 12-foot by 12-foot  section. The space rental fees and raffle provide funds for Community Outreach and Mission projects.

The market will take place on the church parking lot located at the corner of Brown Road and East Fir Street in Sequim. If you have any questions, or would like to reserve a space, call 477-0516.

Group seeks hotline helpers

Healthy Families Of Clallam County is searching for special people to fill positions on its Crisis Hot Line. No prior experience is required. Free individual or group training is provided. Call Sandy at 452-3811 or visit www.healthyfam.org for more information.

Free health checks set

There will be a Lions Health Van in Sequim in the Safeway parking lot, 680 W. Washington St., from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Aug. 14 and in Port Angeles in the Swain’s General Store parking lot from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Aug. 15.

The 62-foot-long, medically equipped Lions Health Screening Unit travels throughout Washington to give free health screenings checking for glaucoma, diabetes, high blood pressure, and sight and hearing loss. Checks are first come, first served.

Pioneers picnic planned

The Sequim Pioneer Picnic is set for noon Sunday, Aug. 16, at the Sequim Prairie Grange’s picnic area, 290 Macleay Road.

Those attending are asked to bring a salad, main dish or dessert. Because of the All School Reunion, there may be many out of town guests, extra food provided be the local residents attending would be appreciated. Drinks and service are provided.

School registration set

Interns to present findings at Aug. 17 open house

The Clallam County Marine Resource Center invites the public to an open house to celebrate the group’s 2015 interns at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 17, at the Port Angeles Yacht Club, 1305 Marine Drive, Port Angeles. They will present their summer projects and the MRC will provide light refreshments.

Youth plane rides set

EAA Chapter 430 hosts its third Young Eagle Rally, set for 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, at the

Sequim Valley Airport. Young aviation enthusiasts (ages 8-17) should bring their parents/guardians along for permission’s sake for free airplane rides. In case of inclement weather, the rally will be postponed to the following Saturday (Aug. 22).

Thrift shop open

The Sequim Dungeness Hospital Guild’s thrift shop, 204 W. Bell St. in Sequim, will be open from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 15. Featured will be like-new furniture and household accessories, kitchen utensils and dishes, fine jewelry and high-end purses and shoes, games, puzzles and much more. All white-tagged items will be marked half-price.

Hot Springs Road to close

The Elwha Valley’s Olympic Hot Springs Road will close at the Olympic National Park boundary for about one month beginning on Tuesday, Sept. 8.

The temporary closure will allow the park’s maintenance crew to make necessary improvements to protect the road before the fall and winter rains arrive.

The 4.5 mile Whiskey Bend Road also is scheduled for repair this fall.

Senior Nutrition menu set

Sequim Senior Nutrition Site menus are served at 4:30 p.m. at the Shipley Center, 921 E. Hammond St. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Suggested donation is $5 (60 and over), $8 guest and a 24-hour advance reservation is needed.

Friday, Aug. 14: Broccoli slaw, tuna casserole, dill carrots, apricots

Legacies topic of talk

Olympic Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 73 Howe Road, Agnew, presents the Rev. Gene Bradbury, at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 16. He will present “The Gifts We Leave Behind, “ a talk about legacies members are leaving for their children, an appreciation of the outdoors and art and literature and music, or the world of computers.
