Apply for Feiro scholarships

High school seniors from Clallam County are eligible to apply for a new college scholarship.

This $500 award is made possible through an annual donation from Mark and Katherine Feiro and their family.

Applications are being accepted through www.thewashboard.org.

Any high school senior residing in Clallam County and intending to enroll in a post-secondary program during the 2016-2017 school year is eligible to apply; this includes homeschooled students. Scholarship applications are due by Dec. 23.

Free day at ONP on Friday

In celebration of Thanksgiving and as a way to encourage healthy outdoor time, Olympic National Park will offer free entry to all park areas on Friday, Nov. 27. Despite recent storm impacts, most park areas are scheduled to be open on the day after Thanksgiving.

The Olympic National Park Visitor Center will be open from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. and the Hoh Visitor Center will be open from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Weather permitting, Hurricane Ridge Road is scheduled to be open during daylight hours.

Griffith talks Peace Corps

Mary Griffith, a member of Dungeness Valley Lutheran Church, will give a presentation about her 2012-2015 Peace Corps experience in Fiji.

She will provide an overview about the country of Fiji, a description of her service with the Ministry of Health National In-service Nursing Division and her work with nurses around the country and her life as a Peace Corps volunteer.

Her program will be at 12:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 7, at Dungeness Valley Lutheran Church, 925 N. Sequim Ave.

Newcomers Club to meet

Come ring in the holiday season and join the Newcomers Club of the Olympic Peninsula on Dec. 1 for lunch at the Red Lion Hotel Ballroom (upstairs) 221 N. Lincoln St., Port Angeles. Port Angeles High School’s select choir, Vocal Unlimited, will perform.

SMUG reviews iPads

The Strait Mac Users Group will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 1, at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 525 N. 5th Ave., Sequim. Ray Bentsen will present a slideshow entitled “The iPad Family 2015.” The slideshow will be an overview of all current iPads.

The presentation will highlight the features and capabilities of each model, as well as including descriptions of the new iPad Pro accessories, the Smart Keyboard and Apple Pencil.

Soroptimist bazaar has it all

Soroptimists International of Sequim will have its annual Gala Gift Show from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, at the Boys & Girls Club, 400 W. Fir St., Sequim.

The Gala Gift Show will feature 45-plus vendors offering unique and luxurious items in home decor, clothing, jewelry/accessories, culinary items, health/beauty products, pet items, children’s books, artwork/photography, and more.

Admission is free. Santa and Mrs. Claus will attend from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. There will be raffle items and door prizes, baked goods, See’s Candies and soup and salad at the cafe.

VFW sets free Thanksgiving dinner for vets, families

The Sequim Veterans of Foreign Wars, 169 E. Washington St., will have a free Thanksgiving dinner from 1-4 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 26, for veterans and their families.

Needy families also are invited. Free winter clothes will be available at the dinner.

Whales in strait discussed

People interested in volunteering for a network response team for stranded marine mammals or those interested in local whales should attend the Juan de Fuca network’s first public outreach event from  6-8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 3, at the Red Lion Hotel, 221 N. Lincoln St., Port Angeles.

The panel discussion, “Whales in the Strait of Juan de Fuca,” will be moderated by Rich Osborne, Ph.D. of the University of Washington Olympic Natural Resource Center, and include speakers Jamie Valadez from the Lower Elwha Klallam tribe, Shane Aggergaard from Island Adventures, the PA Whale Watch parent company, Kiirstin Flynn from Cascadia Research Collective and Helle Andersen of Feiro Marine Life Center.

Admission for the lecture is $7.

Gifts from Christmas angels

The Crossing Church, 96 Deer Park Road, Port Angeles, is sponsoring its Christmas Angel Program from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Dec. 12, where low-income parents may select presents for their children from infants to 18 years old.

Presents may be chosen at Fairview Bible Church, 385 O’Brien Road, Port Angeles.

Senior Nutrition menu set

Sequim Senior Nutrition Site menus are served at 4:30 p.m. at the Shipley Center, 921 E. Hammond St. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Suggested donation is $5 (60 and over), $8 guest and a 24-hour advance reservation is needed. RSVP to 683-8491. Menus are subject to change.
