Different Washington, Same Spirit

In the same peace-loving spirit as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s August 1963 march on Washington, D.C., Sequim Middle School students took to the streets — including Washington Street — on Friday, Jan. 15.

Following an assembly, students walked from the school on Sequim Avenue, Washington Street and Third Avenue. The march was the brainchild of SMS math teacher Richard Miko, who said he felt the school’s annual assembly honoring Dr. King lacked impact.

“Anytime you can actively engage kids in the learning process, it has a better chance of creating a lasting impact on them,” Sequim Middle School principal Vince Riccobene said prior to the march. “This is a great opportunity and I appreciate Mr. Miko’s enthusiasm and vision for our students and our community.”
