Benefit bunco at St. Luke’s

The Sequim Guild hosts a luncheon, silent auction and bunco at noon, Friday, April 15, at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 525 N. Fifth Ave., Sequim. Doors open at 11:30 a.m. and the cost is $15. All proceeds go to Seattle Children’s Hospital’s uncompensated care fund.

‘Boys in the Boat’ talk set

Mark your calendar for a “Boys in the Boat” event at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 13, at the Port Angeles Senior Center auditorium, 328 E. Seventh St. Judy Rantz-Willman, daughter of Joe Rantz, about whom the book is written, will be on hand with her husband Ray Willman to give a presentation on her father’s life and the events leading up to the Olympic races. This event is free and open to the public, however the space holds fewer than 200 people so plan to get there by 6:30 p.m.

Representatives rehash legislative session

The Clallam County Democrats will meet from 6-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 13, at Clallam County Democratic Headquarters, 124-A W. First St. in Port Angeles. Reps. Kevin Van De Wege and Steve Tharinger will present “The 2016 Legislative Session: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.” The public is welcome.

County commission to review shoreline plan

The Clallam County Planning Commission meets at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 6, at the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles. The agenda includes the Continued Draft 2014 Shoreline Master Program Update Review, with a focus on Department of Ecology comments on wetland buffers, wetland mitigation ratios and channel migration. Ice cream in park planned

First Teacher will have an ice cream in the park event at First Teacher Community Playground at Third Avenue and Fir Street in Sequim from 12:30-2:30 p.m. Friday, April 8. This is a date change. Come to eat ice cream with toppings of your choice, plant a seed and enjoy a good time as a community together. Parents and grandparents are encouraged to come. The cost is $5 per adult, $2 per child or $12 for a family of four or more.

Book sale this Saturday

The Friends of Sequim Library hosts its monthly book sale from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, April 9, at the Friends building behind the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave. This month the Friends has a collection of books about water gardening, which includes pond designs, planting and maintenance. The pet care section has new books about the care of dogs, cats and birds, plus dog training and obedience. There is a nearly complete set of Annie’s Attic Mysteries plus some Annie’s Unraveled novels, and a large number of vinyl albums.

SHS track fundraiser set

From 3-6 p.m. Wednesday, April 13, members of the Sequim High School track team will be out and about selling coffee/drink coupon cards, raising funds for the team. Cards are $20 and are good for $120 in free or discounted drinks at local businesses: Adagio Bean & Leaf, The Daily Grind, Hardy’s Market, Java Jungle, Ohana Coffee Company, Rainshadow Coffee Roasting Company, Suzon’s Coffee Lounge, Tootsie’s and White Cup Espresso.

Those wanting cards but unable to contact a team member can stop by track practice at the Sequim High School stadium on Fir Street between 3-5 p.m. weekdays.

Get ‘Feline Fiesta’ tickets

Tickets are still available for the Peninsula Friends Of Animals “Feline Fiesta” luncheon and auction, set for noon-3 p.m. Saturday, April 9, at The Cedars at Dungeness, 1965 Woodcock Road. The event features entertainment by the Hot Apple Pie quartet at The Cedars’ banquet room. Tickets are $35 and are available at PFOA (257509 U.S. Highway 101) or Heather Creek (122 W. Washington St.). Proceeds benefit the PFOA rescue animals. Donations for the auction are accepted as well. Trail diversions at refuge

Visitors to the Dungeness National Wildlife Refuge from April 11-15 may experience temporary delays and trail diversions between 7 a.m.-5 p.m. becasue of a scheduled demolition project at the caretaker’s cabin, located adjacent to the main trail near the refuge’s upper overlook.

The Dungeness Spit will remain open to visitation during construction but trail users may be directed to use the refuge’s primitive trail and may experience short delays while equipment is moved on the refuge’s main trail. The refuge’s primitive trail is not accessible for wheelchairs and strollers and the walking surface is uneven with very soft areas due to winter precipitation.

Learn first aid basics afloat

Robert Stem, Safety Officer for the North Olympic Sail and Power Squadron, will be presenting Medical Emergencies On-Board at the monthly Boating Skills Clinic at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 13, at the Gathering Place at Sunland Golf Course and Country Club, 135 Fairway Drive, Sequim. It is free and open to the public.

Stem will talk about bleeding, burns, broken bones, strokes, heart attacks, helicopter evacuation and first aid courses and certification.

Library starts auto-renewals

In an effort to reduce unnecessary patron fines, the North Olympic Library System now has an automatic renewal service that started April 1.

The new service ensures that renewable library materials will be automatically renewed when they’re due. Once an item has been twice renewed or requested by another patron, however, the due date is fixed and regular overdue charges apply.

In 2015, library fines made up less than 1.5 percent of the library system’s operating budget, so staffers say a reduction in overdue fines is not expected to affect library operations; fees for damaged and lost material will continue to be assessed as normal.

Hear about adventures in Northwest Passage

The Sequim Bay Yacht Club meets from 7-8 p.m. Wednesday, April 13, with featured speaker George Hone. He and two other adventurous small boat sailors sailed the Northwest Passage in a home-built 27-foot sailboat on $10 a day per person. This was a trip of five months and was the smallest vessel to complete the Northwest Passage in a single season. The public is invited. The club meets at John Wayne Marina, 2577 West Sequim Bay Road, Sequim.

WWU offers new degree through Peninsula College

Western Washington University on the Peninsulas will begin offering a Multidisciplinary Studies degree in the fall. There will be an information session from 11 a.m.-noon Friday, April 8, in Peninsula College Room P-1G. This information session will describe the flexibility of degree completion through this program. If you have 90 credits in college courses or an associate degree and want to complete a bachelor’s degree, this flexible program may be perfect for you. Name the octopus

The public is welcome to submit votes online to help name the Feiro Marine Life Center’s newest (temporary) resident, a young giant Pacific octopus. Members of the public can select one of five names by visiting Feiro’s web site at http://feiromarinelifecenter.org/octopus

. Voting continues through 5 p.m. Friday, April 8. The name receiving the most votes will be selected.

Tools for caregivers class set

An extensive eight-week course, “Powerful Tools for the Caregiver,” will be presented on Wednesdays, May 4-June 8, at the Latter-day Saints Church, 815 W. Washington St., in Sequim. The classes teach caregivers how to stay healthy and take care of themselves while caring long-term for family members or friends. Presenters do not teach how to be a caregiver. ‘4th and Goal’ fundraiser set

Captain Joseph House Foundation in Port Angeles, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, will have a “4th and Goal” fundraiser from 4:30-10 p.m. Saturday, April 23, at the Sunland Golf Course clubhouse, 109 Hilltop Drive, Sequim. Tickets are $80 for individuals, $70 for active and retired military. A $1,000 corporate table secures advertising in the program and seating for eight. Senior Nutrition menu set

Sequim Senior Nutrition Site menus are served at 4:30 p.m. at the Shipley Center, 921 E. Hammond St. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Suggested donation is $5 (60 and over), $8 guest and a 24-hour advance reservation is needed. RSVP to 683-8491. Menus are subject to change.
