WSU Clallam County Extension is hosting four free events this April and May inviting the public to investigate waste reduction.

Trashy Art Night

Sunday, April 17, 2-5 p.m., Carver Room, Port Angeles Library

Get creative with material reuse and upcycling. Be inspired by wearable “trashion” and other crafty ideas; make wearable or functional art from materials that otherwise would go in the trash. Some materials provided — bring interesting discards, crafting supplies.

Participants can register their dashing designs for the April 22 RainFest River & Ocean Days Upcycle and Trashion Show in Forks or sign up for the 2016 Washington Coast Cleanup on 4/23. Co-sponsored by the Trashion Show and CoastSavers.

Hugelkultur and    Compost Workshop

Sunday, May 1, 1-4 p.m., pre-registration required, location TBA

Learn about composting basics and participate in a hands-on creation of a hugelkultur mound. Hugelkultur is an innovative method of using decomposition of woody debris and other organic matter to build planting mounds — a great alternative to burning that puts bulky organic materials to work for you in your garden or landscape.

Food Recovery and Gleaning Kickoff

Monday, May 9, 6-8 p.m., Carver Room, Port Angeles Library

Calling old and new participants for the Clallam County Gleaning Program and anyone interested in food waste. Learn about impacts of food waste and how Extension does and can turn it into a resource, especially for neighbors in need. Meet WSU’s new produce recovery coordinator, get registered as a 2016 gleaning volunteer and share your ideas for reducing food waste in our community.

Re-use Roundtable

Saturday, May 21, 2-4 p.m. Carver Room, Port Angeles Library

Learn and share tricks and tips for fixing electronics, clothes and other stuff on your own. Build community connections and reduce the number of repairable objects that are thrown in the trash.
