Learn proper firearms handling in classes

The Clallam County Sheriff’s Office received a grant from the National Rifle Association in the amount of $2,800 for community outreach.

This grant funding will be used to educate citizens on firearms handling and the decision making process when it comes to shoot/no-shoot situations utilizing the Firearms Simulator.

Sgt. Randy Pieper will lead the classes which will start in May. Each class will accommodate up to 12 students and last approximately three hours.

The first class in May will be by invite only and the Sheriff’s Advisory Committee, Board of County Commissioners, chaplains, media and school district officials will be the first groups sent an invitation.

Subsequent classes will be offered to the general public who complete an Indemnity Agreement Form and Authorization to Release Information to allow for a background check prior to acceptance into the class.

Members of the Sheriff’s Citizens Advisory Committee, Board of County Commissioners, media, chaplains and school district officials are invited to attend the first Firearms Safety Class from 1-4 p.m. Sunday, May 15.

If you are a member of this group and wish to attend, complete the attached Indemnity Agreement Form and email it to administrative coordinator Lorraine shore at lshore@co.clallam.wa.us no later than May 11 to be placed on the class roster.

The class will be filled in order of responses so the first 12 people who commit to attending will be on the list and there will be a waitlist established in the event there is a cancellation.

These classes will be held in the Emergency Operations Center Training Room.

Below are the scheduled classes:

• Sunday, May 15, 1-4 p.m. hours by invitation only

• Saturday, June 4, 10 a.m.-1 p.m.

• Saturday, July 16, 10 am.-1 p.m.

• Saturday, Sept. 24, 10 a.m.-1 p.m.

Attendees may not bring weapons of any kind in the courthouse. A safety briefing will be given at the beginning of each class.
