Algae affairs is the next topic at May 10 SEF Science Café

Scott J. Edmundson, a scientist working with the Marine Sciences Laboratory, presents “Algae in Human Affairs: Blooms, Fuels and Carbon Capture” at the next Science Café, presented by the Sequim Education Foundation, set for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 10, at the Paradise Restaurant, 703 N. Sequim Ave.

Edmundson joined the Marine Sciences Laboratory in 2013 as a post-master’s research associate working on algae biomass and biofuel projects under the guidance of mentor Michael Huesemann.

He will present an overview of the role of algae in humans’ future lives. Edmundson’s newest research is focused on characterizing species-specific physiological aspects of select microalgae for the capture of atmospheric carbon dioxide and the simultaneous production of renewable, sustainable fuels and bioproducts.

The Science Café is a community service of the Sequim Education Foundation. Programs present expert speakers for adult and young adult audiences interested in current developments in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Events are held on the second Tuesday of the month at the Paradise Restaurant. Admission is free and food and beverages are available for purchase.
