Commission looks at rental, B&B regulations

The Clallam County Planning Commission meets at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 1, at the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles. Agenda items include preliminary draft regulations for vacation rentals and bed & breakfast inns. Call 417-2277.

Funds putting local food in local food banks

WSU Clallam County Extension is embarking on a new program that helps both area farmers and food banks. In partnership with Rotary First Harvest, Extension has received funding from the Washington State Department of Agriculture to buy food directly from local farms for Clallam County food banks and food pantries.

Those farmers interested in contracting with Extension for the purchase of produce at wholesale prices for the food bank should contact the WSU Extension office by email (clea.rome@wsu.edu) or call 417-2280. Program organizers say contracts need to be secured within the next week.

Democrats kick off 2016 food drive today

The kickoff event for the Clallam County Democrats 2016 Food Bank Challenge will be from 6:30-9 p.m. Wednesday, June 1, at the CCD Headquarters, 124-A W. First St. Port Angeles. Clallam County commissioner and former executive director of the Sequim Food Bank, Mark Ozias, will be the featured speaker. Guests are asked to bring canned food with a suggested donation of $20 or 20 cans. The goal is $1,000 or 1,000 cans of food by June 30; drop off canned food to the CCD headquarters from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Monday-Saturday. Checks may be mailed to Clallam County Democrats, P.O. Box 2454, Port Angeles, WA 98362.

Car wash benefit for B&G club

Both Sequim Windermere Real Estate offices in Sequim are sponsoring a benefit carwash at 11 a.m. Friday, June 3, at Red Carpet Car, 231 Valley Center Place, Sequim, to buy an air hockey table for the Sequim Boys & Girls Club.

Rummage sale set

Selections ranging from tools to jewelry will be offered in the annual rummage sale at Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 S. Blake Ave., from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Friday, June 3, and 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, June 4. Among other items will be furniture, appliances, clothing, books, plants and toys. Proceeds support the church’s community projects. Information is available from the church at 683-5367.

Ice cream social on tap

The Sequim Prairie Grange, 290 Macleay Road, will have its first ice cream social of the season from 5-7 p.m. Sunday, June 5. Banana splits or sundaes are $5 each. Proceeds will go to benefit the Sequim Prairie Grange Building Fund. For more information, call Marie at 683-4599.

Free Microsoft training at Port Angeles Library

The Washington State Library, in partnership with the Port Angeles Library, offers multiple sessions of the Microsoft Office Specialist certification exam at no charge, scheduled for June 6-8 at the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St. Market value for a Microsoft Office Specialist exam is typically between $99-$130, depending on the location. Internet and Computing Core Certification (IC3) certification exams also will be available free of charge during all test sessions.

To help prepare for success on the exams, Washington residents can take online courses through the Microsoft Imagine Academy Program free through the North Olympic Library System website, www.nols.org.

Senior singles meet for lunch on June 5

Sequim Senior Singles monthly gathering will begin with check-in at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, June 5, in Legends Room downstairs at The Cedars at Dungeness Golf Course, 1965 Woodcock Road, Sequim. The cost is $15 and the meal is either an Italian buffet with lasagna, Caesar salad and garlic bread or meatloaf with garlic mashed potatoes and gravy, mixed green salad with assorted dressings, rolls and butter, with cookies for dessert and assorted beverages. ‘Out of the nest’

Saturday, June 11, the final Backyard Birding will meet from 10 a.m.-noon at the Dungeness River Audubon Center. Ken Wiersema and Shirley Anderson will discuss “Birds Out of the Nest.” Topics include adult bird roles in feeding and rearing young birds, changes in feeding needs, making your property less hazardous to young birds and lifestyles of young birds at the most vulnerable time of their lives. There is a $5 fee for those over 18 years. This is the final session of Backyard Birding for 2015-2016 sessions. Watch for announcements this fall of the 2016-2017 series of Backyard Birding programs.

Senior menu set

Sequim Senior Nutrition Site menus are served at 4:30 p.m. at the Shipley Center, 921 E. Hammond St. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Suggested donation is $5 (60 and over), $8 guest and a 24-hour advance reservation is needed. RSVP to 683-8491. Menus are subject to change.
