PC sets 2016-2017 Maier Hall concert series

Another round of top musicians are in the lineup for this year’s Maier Hall Concert Series, hosted by Peninsula College.

Now in its fifth year, the series welcomes back two of its most popular ensembles from the third season as well as a new flute/percussion duo whose members are natives of Colombia and Japan, respectively.

According to Dr. David Jones, head of the college’s music program, the series still is primarily focused on classical music from the Medieval Era to the Modern Period, but in a reflection of the ever-widening stylistic stew that is classical music, the music heard on this series might contain elements of jazz, popular, experimental and even global musical styles.

Concerts are set for select Tuesdays and Saturdays at 7 p.m.

The debut concert on Saturday, Oct. 15, features the return of the Onyx Chamber Players. The members of this ensemble combine a unique blend of early music performance style with the brilliance and virtuosity of modern instruments, and include violinist James Garlick, a graduate of Port Angeles High School, cellist Meg Brennand and pianist David White.

For the second concert in the series, PC will welcome a new classical/world music duo to the Maier Hall Concert Series on Tuesday, Feb. 28. The Miho & Diego Duo has been blending Latin and Japanese musical traditions since 2006. Both Miho Takekawa and Diego Coy are accomplished musicians in their own right.

The rich sounds of the recorder, violin and harpsichord fill Maier Concert Hall on Tuesday, April 18, when the series presents the acclaimed Ensemble Electra from Seattle. After successful appearances on the series in 2012-2013 and 2014-2015, Ensemble Electra is back as a trio again. The musicians are Vicki Boeckman, recorder; Tekla Cunningham, violin; and Jillon Stoppels Dupree, harpsichord.

Cost for the concert series is $40. Individual tickets to each concert are $15 general; and $5 for students.

The 15 performances of the first four seasons already have brought 12 ensembles or soloists to Maier Concert Hall on the PC campus, consisting of 30 musicians from as far away as Switzerland, Denmark and New Zealand.
