Auditions set for Olympic Theatre Arts production of ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’

Auditions for the next Olympic Theatre Arts Main Stage production, “The Importance of Being Earnest,” will be at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 30, and 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3, in the OTA Gathering Hall, 414 N. Sequim Ave.

Characters include the following:

John “Jack” Worthing: A young, eligible bachelor about town

Algernon Moncrieff: A languid poser of the leisure class

Lacy Bracknell: Algernon’s aunt trying to find a suitable wife for him. The perfect symbol of Victorian earnestness

Gwendolyn Fairfax: Lady Bracknell’s daughter

Cecily Cardew: Jack Worthing’s ward, a debutante age 18

Miss Prism: Cecily’s governess, a symbol of Victorian moral righteousness

Rev. Canon Chasuble: Appears to be an old lecher

Land and Merriman: Servants of Algernon and Jack

“The Importance of Being Ernest” was written by Oscar Wilde and is considered to be a classic piece first opening in London in 1894.

The storyline goes something like this: Two young gents have taken to bending the truth in order to put some excitement into their lives. Worthing has invented a brother, Earnest, whom he uses as an excuse to leave his dull life behind to visit Gwendolyn. Montcrieff decides to take the name Earnest when visiting Worthing’s young and beautiful ward, Cecily.

Things start to go awry when they end up together in the country and their deceptions are discovered.

The production will be directed by Anna Andersen.

Auditions will be conducted as a workshop on British accents and on stage direction where the actors will be using cold readings from the script. Thus, those auditioning are requested to come at the start time and stay through the end.

Rehearsals will begin immediately, with the show opening on Jan. 27, 2017, for a three-week run, closing on Feb. 12, 2017.
