Boys basketball: Wins put Wolves on brink of district playoffs

Two steps closer.
With a pair of Olympic League wins last week, Sequim’s boys basketball squad is on the cusp of a berth in the West Central District playoffs, a spot they haven’t seen since the 2014-2015 season.
On Jan. 16, Payton Glasser scored 20 points and the Sequim defense pounced all over Kingston in the first quarter in a 57-35 win.
Sequim jumped ahead in the first quarter 19-2 and built a lead of 44-21 after three quarters as they cruised in the fourth.
Glasser, who also had six rebounds and four steals, got plenty of help from his teammates. Nate Despain had 12 points, four assists and six steals. Cole Williams scored eight with nine rebounds and two blocks, while Riley Cowan had eight points and seven steals.
The Wolves totaled 20 steals, holding Kingston to just 43 shots (compared to 58 for Sequim) and 11-for-43 shooting.
Bearing down on Bremerton
Minus a shaky third quarter, Sequim (5-4 in league, 8-8 overall) dominated a match-up with winless Bremerton on Jan. 19, knocking off the Knights 53-40.
Sequim jumped out to a 12-4 first quarter lead and 29-7 halftime advantage before the Knights closed the gap to 36-24 after three quarters.
Despain and Glasser led the way with 19 points apiece. Posts Cowan and Williams added solid all-around games; Williams had seven points, six rebounds and five steals, while Cowan added four points, six rebounds and five assists.
Keith Jackmon led Bremerton with 21 points.
Looking ahead
Sequim was slated to host North Mason on Jan. 23.
The Wolves are at Olympic on Jan. 26. They finish the regular season with a pair of home games: Jan. 30 against non-league foe Coupeville, who they routed by 24 points in December, and league powerhouse North Kitsap on Feb. 1.
