With one of their top athletes recuperating, Sequim’s boys track team still managed to place third at the Olympic League championships, held May 5 in Poulsbo.
Murray Bingham and Fischer Jensen both won multiple events for Sequim. Bingham won the 800 meters (2:00.14) and the 1,600 meters (4:30.71), while Jensen won the 110-meter hurdles (16.76) and the 300-meter hurdles (41.67).
Bingham also helped Sequim’s 4×400 team take first with a time of 3:38.40. Other members of the 4×400 were Alec Shingleton, Logan Laxson and Darren Salazar.
Sequim’s Riley Cowan also won the javelin with a throw of 162-2; teammate Payton Glasser was second with a 145-8 effort.
Shingleton raced to a second place finish in the 400 meters with a personal best 52.11 finish and Liam Byrne topped 12-6 in the pole vault for a personal best and second place finish.
Glasser was third in the high jump (5-6). Salazar also placed third in the 200-meter race (22.84) and fourth in the 100 (11.37), both personal bests.
Junior Riley Martin, who holds top-10 marks in the 110- and 300-meter hurdles events, was held out of the weekend meet with a nagging back issue, Sequim coach Brad Moore said. The Sequim coach said the team hopes Martin can compete in the upcoming sub-district meet.
Elizabeth Sweet had the top finish for Sequim’s girls, placing second in the pole vault with a 9-6 mark.
Shayli Schuman took third in the 100-meter hurdles (16.55), a personal record.
Kaitlyn Viada took fourth in the javelin (89-0) while teammate Kristinna Barnet raced to a 2:40 finish in the 800-meter race, good for fifth place and a personal best.
North Kitsap won the 2A league boys’ meet with 797 team points, out-pacing North Mason (368), Sequim (351) and Port Angeles (322).
Port Angeles edged host North Kitsap (600.5-571) for the 2A league girls title; Sequim placed seventh.
The league’s junior varsity championship meet was May 7 in Kingston; results were not available for this section at press time.
