Sister City Chaperones & Students Enjoy Lunch at Hwy 101 Diner
Every September, the Sequim Sister City Association (SSCA) hosts students and chaperones from our Sister City in Shiso, Japan. On Friday, September 20th, George Kennedy and Jan Danford joined the 2019 Shiso chaperones and 10 students for hamburgers and fries at the Highway 101 Diner.
Shortly after their lunch, the students met their host families at the Sequim Civic Center. The Group Leader, Takashi Asada and Mayor Dennis Smith each gave brief speeches of welcome before the students left to spend five days with their host families.
While the students spent time getting to know their American families, the Sequim Sister City members hosted the chaperones. Friday evening, the Japanese chaperones were guests at a dinner in their honor at Mariner Café. Asada and Toshihiro Kamei were escorted on a two-hour bicycle ride with 11 Sequim bicyclists. Saturday evening, they were treated to a traditional turkey dinner at the home of Richard and Shoko Suskind. On Sunday they spent the day with the Sequim chaperones, Jennifer Imholt and Jon Jack and their families, who will escort 10 Sequim students to Tokyo and Kyoto before spending five days in Shiso.
Asada and Kamei also toured City of Sequim facilities, and spoke at the City Council and Sequim School Board meetings. Tuesday, they toured all of our Sequim public schools and met School Superintendent, Dr. Robert Clark. On their last full day in Sequim, the Sequim Sister City Association held an American style potluck dinner where the Japanese students entertained their host families and the Sister City members.
This is the 27th year the association has hosted visitors from Shiso, formerly named Yamasaki.
