Larsen discusses plant-talk at Green Thumbs online presentation

Pam Larsen, teacher of organic gardening classes and speaker on a range of plant research findings important to local gardeners, presents information on the language of plants via Zoom Meetings from noon-1 p.m. Thursday, April 9.

Larsen’s presentation, “Plant Defensive Communication,” is part of the Green Thumbs Garden Tips education series, a series sponsored by the WSU Clallam County Master Gardeners and held on the second and fourth Thursday each month through October.

For first-time users of the Zoom app, log in 10 minutes early to make sure the connection is working properly, volume on the speakers is adequate, microphone is muted so that attendees cannot hear background noise from one’s location and video is off.

Larsen suggests that most people see plants as stationary pawns in a dangerous world of plant eaters. She says reality is that because plants have a common language they can communicate internally and, with beneficial members of their neighborhood, deal with plant assailants.

In her presentation she will elaborate on how this works and what gardeners can do to encourage these defensive actions to avoid using chemical sprays.

Larsen is the founder of Sequim Organic Gardeners and co-founder of Sequim Community Organic Gardens. Her article, “the Secret Language of Plants,” was published in the January-February 2017 issue of “The American Gardener” magazine.

Additionally, Larsen is the creator of The Rainshadow Planting Guide which provides annual recommendations by month for how and when to plant which vegetables in our gardens.
