Milestone: Salazar receives Haller PTO scholarship

For his volunteer efforts at the school, Darren Salazar — former Helen Haller Elementary School student and soon-to-be Sequim High graduate — was recently awarded a $500 scholarship by the Helen Haller PTO (Parent-Teacher Organization).

Salazar will receive a $500 scholarship, Helen Haller fourth-grade teacher Eric Danielson noted.

Eligible students had to have attended Haller Elementary for at least three years and have spent at least five hours helping at the elementary school, though Salazar put in many more than that, scholarship representatives said.

Because Sequim high School’s annual scholarship awards evening traditionally held in late May has been cancelled, Salazar was notified of the honor.

Mitzi Sanders, Sequim High’s career center coordinator, scanned parts of scholarship notebooks so scholarship candidates’ applications and backgrounds could be viewed online.

The Haller Elementary scholarship, awarded for the last 20 years, has provided nearly $10,000 in scholarships to Haller students graduating from Sequim High School. Most of the funds come from the Haller PTO, with some donations coming from outside sources.

Those interested in donating are encouraged to contact Danielson at edanielson@sequimschools.org.
