Celebrate Juneteenth with NOLS program

Published 1:30 am Wednesday, June 1, 2022

The North Olympic Library System (NOLS) is partnering with SilverKite Community Arts and The Mahogany Project to offer a virtual Juneteenth Celebration and Workshop at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 8. Register at nols.org/juneteenth or by calling a NOLS branch to receive a Zoom link. Reach the Sequim Library at 360-683-1161.

Explore the history, legacy and lasting impact of Juneteenth, the new federal holiday that commemorates the full emancipation of enslaved African American people on June 19, 1865. Explore music, drumming, storytelling and reflection; featured artists include Niela Maryam, Bernie Hall and Merri Ann Osborne.

Participants are encouraged to dress comfortably and have shakers or other percussion instruments to play, if available. Rhythm Buckets can be checked out at nols.org/nols-gear-art-music or by calling a NOLS branch. A recording will be available after the event at silverkite.us/nols.

SilverKite offers arts programs for older adults, dementia-friendly arts programs, and intergenerational arts experiences open to the public.

This program is supported by the Friends of the Library.

Library introduces new catalog system

On May 24, the North Olympic Library System (NOLS) began using a new catalog “to provide a better online experience for its users.”

The new catalog will offer a simpler, more intuitive experience. New features include: easy discovery of new books, materials and resources with browsable displays and powerful new searching capabilities; all available formats for a single title displayed together in search results and lists; ability to checkout, and access eBooks, eAudiobooks, and digital magazines directly from the catalog; integrated electronic content, digital archives and enrichment from other databases and resources such as Overdrive and Hoopla; and, reading recommendations, ratings and more.

Feedback can be shared with staff or at nols.org/new-catalog-feedback. Additional features and improvements will continue to be rolled out, library officials said.

Library patrons can access all of their checkouts, holds and saved lists from the new catalog, using their current barcodes and passwords.
