Highway roadwork may cause night-time delays
Nighttime travelers on U.S. Highway 101 should prepare for possible delays this week. Lane closures or shifted lanes will allow crews to repair areas of the highway between Gardiner and Port Angeles.
Through the night of Friday, Aug. 26, Washington State Department of Transportation maintenance crew members will repair sections of highway along an approximately 27-mile section of U.S. Highway 101.
Crews will work on small sections of the road each night from 6 p.m.-4:30 a.m. beginning in Port Angeles near Morse Creek (they were scheduled to start Aug. 22). Crews will move east to Pierce Road near Gardiner. The project spans from mileposts 246.9 to 273.5.
In areas where there are multiple lanes on the highway, travelers will see a lane shift or single-lane closure. Farther east where the highway is one lane in each direction, travelers will see one-way alternating traffic with flaggers.
Paving work is weather-dependent and could be rescheduled.
Real-time traffic information is available on the WSDOT statewide travel map (wsdot.com/Travel/Real-time/Map).

Elwha recovery in spotlight at Lower Elwha event
The community is invited to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of Elwha River dam removal with the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe with public presentations and discussions from 6:30-9:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 30, at Peninsula College’s Little Theater, 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd.
“Elwha Ecosystem Restoration — 10 Dam-Free Years and Counting” will highlight ways the Elwha River system is recovering and how the study of the river is advancing the science of dam removal and river restoration. A short film will illustrate how dam removal and river restoration work is proceeding across the American West.
Presentations will also focus on plans for major dam removals on the Klamath River in California, and on the growing movement — inspired in part by the Elwha — for dam removal in Europe.
Poster presentations by river restoration experts, environmental groups, and local students will share recent scientific discoveries and opportunities for community and citizen science involvement in long-term monitoring efforts.
Light refreshments will be provided at a reception in ʔaʔkʷustəŋáw̕txʷ House of Learning, Peninsula College Longhouse.
This event is free and open to the public, but registration is required at: tinyurl.com/3s9v892p.
