Soroptimists seek Live Your Dream award candidates

Soroptimist International of Sequim is seeking qualified candidates living in Clallam County for the Live Your Dream award.

Awards of $1,000-$2,000 are available to women who have financial need and are the primary financial support for their families, group members said. They must be enrolled in or have been accepted to an undergraduate degree program or vocational/skills training program.

Applications must be received on or before Nov. 15.

OPA offers chili, cornbread fundraiser

Olympic Peninsula Academy’s PTO (parent-teacher organization) is hosting its second-annual Chili & Cornbread Takeout Fundraiser.

In collaboration with Sequim’s Alderwood Bistro, the group is offering a quart of chili con carne (with meat) alongside a chunk of cornbread, a meal for two people for pre-order and pickup between 5-6 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 27, at the Sequim High School parking lot, 601 N. Sequim Ave.

For a generous donor, the PTO offers delivery for $100.

Haller foundation to celebrate 30th year, awards

The Albert Haller Foundation will celebrate its 30th year of giving at its annual awards ceremony at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25, at the Lincoln Center, 905 W. Ninth St., Port Angeles.

About $300,000 will be distributed among nonprofit recipients selected by United Way and approved by the foundation board, foundation president Gary W. Smith said.

Each recipient will be invited to say a few words about how the money is being used, how many people are served and more, he said. Light refreshments will be served.

To date, the foundation has given more than $10 million to community organizations.

Lighthouse group to meet

The New Dungeness Light Station Association members host their first in-person annual members meeting since 2019, at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 S. Blake Ave.

Community members are invited to learn what’s been happening at the New Dungeness Lighthouse. Door prizes will be awarded, light snacks will be served and merchandise will be available for purchase. New members joining at the meeting will receive a free T-shirt while supplies last.

Anglers to meet

The Puget Sound Anglers North Olympic Peninsula Chapter will be hosting an open to the public general meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 19, at the Sequim Elks Lodge, 143 Port Williams Road.

People start gathering at 6:30 p.m. and the meeting starts at 7 p.m.

The guest speaker is Dr. Joseph Anderson, a research biologist with Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. He will reporting on the return of fish to the Elwha River since removal of the dams.

The gathering includes a short business meeting, fishing reports and raffle drawings following his talk; raffles are for members only. Attendees can join that night to participate. the annual membership is $25 and includes The Reel News monthly publication.

Genealogy class set for Oct. 22

The Clallam County Genealogical Society is offering a class for beginners — the “I Know Nothing About Genealogy” class — at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, in the society’s research center, 403 E. Eighth St., Port Angeles.

In the class, participants will discover ways to find records and things these papers of the past tell us. There is no charge for the class and all are invited to come.

Fall fun at Sequim grange

Community members are invited to an evening of pumpkin carving, decorated trunks, fun treats and lots of candy from 4:30-7:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, at the Sequim Prairie Grange, 290 Macleay Road.

This walk-through event will be held in the outdoor kitchen area behind the main grange building

Tax-Aide volunteer opportunity available

Community members who are good with forms and instructions, have strong basic computer skills and enjoy helping people are encouraged to become an IRS-certified Tax-Aide volunteer.

Sponsored by AARP and the IRS, the Tax-Aide program offers free tax preparation services. Volunteers don’t need to be an AARP member to help out.

Local office open to help disabled veterans

The Disabled American Veterans (DAV) office in the Worksource building, 810 W. Brackett Road, is open 10 a.m.-3 p.m. every Wednesday to serve veterans who are needing help with claims or other information.

Services are free and veterans do not have to be members of DAV to receive assistance. The office is by walk-in; no appointment is necessary. Masks are required upon entrance.
