Sequim’s Garrett Little is back on top, taking the West Central District singles tennis title a week after placing second in the Olympic League tourney.
Little, who was the league champion in 2020-2021 and 2021, and placed third at the state 2A tournament last season, advances to the 2022 state tourney in Seattle in May, when boys’ and girls’ prep tennis seasons conclude.
Little opened districts with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Ethan Dang of Lindbergh, then topped Sammamish’s Jordan Wang in straight sets (6-3, 6-3) before Sammamish’s Rafael Polito forfeited to Little in the semifinal.
In the district final, Little outlasted Jack Wang of Sammamish 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 for the title.
Port Angeles’ Reef Gelder, who edged Little for this year’s league title, placed third at districts, held Oct. 28-29 in Bremerton. Gelder also advances to state, along with North Kitsap’s Indigo Gallagher-Zapf (sixth place) and three Sammamish singles players.
Four doubles teams from the Olympic League, including NK’s district champs Mason Chmielewski and Etha Gillespie, and Port Angeles’ Edun Bailey and Jacob Miller (third place) advance to state.
