They chose BSA Troop 90’s chili as their favorite along with judges.

The first Sequim Community Chili Cook-Off on April 15 brought in hundreds of dollars for area nonprofits at the Sequim Masonic Lodge.

“It was a really good event, and everyone came away with positive comments,” BSA Troop 90 scoutmaster Rene Nadon said.

His troop, along with the Boys & Girls Club of the Olympic Peninsula, Habitat for Humanity of Clallam County, Pennies For Quarters and the Sequim Food Bank participated in the cook-off. The Masons were unable to participate, Nadon said.

Troop 90 took first place, Habitat placed second, and the Boys & Girls Club too third to earn $100-$500.

All groups received a portion of ticket sales and raffle/auction monies, Nadon said.

Judges included: Sequim city councilor Vicki Lowe; Sequim Schools’ superintendent Regan Nickels; Dr. Kirsti Turella with Turella Oral Surgery & Dental Implants; Brown Maloney, owner of Owner Radio Pacific Inc., and Lynn Horton with Sequim Irrigation Festival.

Royalty with the festival also judged the chili and chose Troop 90.

Nadon said organizers plan to host the cook-off again, expand it and get word out more to the community.

The was sponsored by Brokers Group, CrossCountry Mortgage, Dungeness Kids, Highlands Mortgage and Sunshine Café.
