Lodge returns to live music with Tess Teel show
Dance to the tunes of vocalist/bandleader Tess Teel and Queens and Aces, from 6-8:30 p.m. Saturday, June 17, at the Naval Elks Lodge, 131 E. First St., Port Angeles.
Admission is $12, or $10 for Elks members.
It’s the first dance in the historic Elks ballroom in nearly three years, following closures from the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Port Angeles Elks are planning to host several dances on Saturdays each month, Teel said, and this is the inaugural dance of the season.
The ballroom is accessible by elevator for those concerned about climbing stairs.
Woodturners set meeting
The Strait Turners Woodturning Club meets at 11 a.m. on Saturday June 17, at the Gardiner Community Center, 980 Old Gardiner Road.
The club will have an in-house meeting this month and the demonstrator, club member Jim Westmoreland, will be presenting a PowerPoint demonstration on segmented work remotely through Zoom.
Masks are not required but can be worn. Join the group and expand one’s knowledge of woodturning.

Author group’s open mics move to Fridays
Olympic Peninsula Authors (OPA) hosts monthly open mics, newly moved to the third Friday of each month, both live — in the community relations room at KSQM 91.5 FM, 609 W.Washington St. — and on Zoom.
From 6-7:30 p.m. on Friday, June 16, the group hosts a program in particular for writers who are considering traditional publishing through major houses vs smaller presses.

The featured speaker is best-selling historical fiction author Renee Rosen. Her works often feature tough American women such as Helen Gurly Brown, Estee Lauder or the notorious participants in the Vanderbilt/Aster feud.
Rosen will describe her own history with agents and publishers, then will answer audience questions before the rest of the evening is devoted to local authors reading five-minute pieces.
Skwim Toastmasters schedule June 20 ‘coaching’ event
Learn how to be a better Toastmasters presenter and competitor at the Skwim Toastmasters’ next meeting, set for 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, June 20, at the KSQM 91.5 FM broadcasting office, 609 W. Washington St., or on Zoom. Register at skwimccc3.eventbrite.com.
Special guests are Nitay-Yair Levi from Australia, runner-up world champion in 2021, and Alexandre Matte from Canada, runner-up world champion in 2022. They’ll be coaching Sequim Toastmaster Lindy MacLaine, the District 32 International Speech Contest winner, District 36 winner Joe Shaw.
The champs will give their speech, receive feedback, go off to apply that advice and come back to deliver their transformed speech, Skwim Toastmasters said.
MacLaine placed third in the World Championship of Public Speaking in 2020, and now awaits results of the Regional quarterfinals, to be announced early in July.
Skwim Toastmasters is part of Toastmasters International, a worldwide nonprofit educational organization that “empowers individuals to become more effective communicators and leaders.” The club meets from 7-8:30 p.m. on Tuesdays at the KSQM 91.5 FM broadcasting office. City of Sequim seeking music-inspired artwork
The City of Sequim Arts Commission (SAC) is seeking submissions of artwork that explores “Music” as a creative expression for the next exhibit in the Karen Kuznek-Reese Gallery at the Sequim Civic Center, at 152 W. Cedar St.
All interpretations of the theme are welcome. Deadline for submissions 4 p.m. Wednesday, June 14. Only digital applications will be considered. To enter, complete the form at form.jotform.com/231366897915168; the link allows you to download of up to three images (preferably 300 dpi).
All entries will be juried by the SAC by June 19 and artists will be notified of their status by June 21. Artwork delivery will be scheduled for June 28 and 30 and participants will be contacted to schedule delivery of artwork to the Sequim Civic Center.

International organist sets Port Angeles concert
Hear Manuel Piazza, an award-winning, internationally acclaimed organist, in concert at 7 p.m. on Friday, June 16, at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 301 E. Lopez St., Port Angeles.
Piazza is the interim associate director of music at Trinity Church in the City of Boston. In May 2022, he graduated with an master’s degree from the Yale Institute of Sacred Music, where he studied organ repertoire with Martin Jean, improvisation with Jeffrey Brillhart, and choral conducting with Dale Adelmann and Gloria Yin. Additionally, he served as senior organ scholar at Trinity Church on the Green, where he was mentored by Walden Moore.
He developed a passion for sacred music while attending St. Michael’s Choir School in Toronto, where he served as a chorister and began organ studies.
GAYLA set for June 17
A free event to celebrate diversity, community and summer! The Social Norm’s Social Club for YOUth will host its first annual GAYLA, an Alternative Prom Formal Dance from 5:30-9 p.m. on Saturday, June 17, in the social hall of First United Methodist Church, 110 E. Seventh St., Port Angeles.
A drug and alcohol-free event, the GAYLA is designed for all ages from middle school and above. The GAYLA is a drug and alcohol-free event.
New textile exhibit set in PT
Thirty-four textile art pieces created by 21 Sequim, Port Townsend, Bainbridge Island, Poulsbo, Chimacum, Port Ludlow, and Port Angeles artists are on display weekend afternoons through Aug. 27 at the Mead Werks tasting room at Wilderbee Farm, 223 Cook Ave., Port Townsend.
“Farm & Garden, Sea & Shore” includes art quilts, jewelry, felted pieces, garlands, embellished digital prints of photographs, table linens, a shawl and collages.
Participating Sequim artists include Lora Armstrong, Linda Carlson, Liisa Fagerlund and Lynn Gilles.
Port Townsend artists include Irene Bloom, Leslie Dickinson, Caryl Fallert-Gentry, Sue Gale, Kindy Kemp, Cindy LeRouge, Janice Speck, Joyce Wilkerson and Erika Wurm.
Port Angeles artists include Evette Allerdings, Marilyn Hiestand and Diane Williams.
Bainbridge Island artists include Donna Lee Dowdney and Dale Walker.
Also participting are Mary Tyler of Chimacum, Terri Wolf of Port Ludlow, and Daera Leslie Dobbs of Poulsbo.
