Sequim youth hoops camp set

Sequim High School’s basketball team hosts a clinic from June 26-28 at the Sequim Middle School gymnasium, 301 W. Hendrickson Road.

Registration starts at 8:30 a.m., with players in kindergarten-second grade (by grade recently completed) going from 9-10:15 a.m., and students in grades 3-7 going from 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Cost is $75 per player.

Coming up aces at Sunland

Sunland Golf Club has seen its share of hole-in-one feats in recent weeks.

Club member Mike Oliver aced hole No. 17 on May 24, teeing off from the white tees from 115 yards out, using a 6-iron to hit into a 20-mile-per-hour headwind. Mark Meythaler, Jeff Fox and Dan O’Claray witnessed the hole-in-one.

Sunland member Cyndi Carpine used a Callaway 8 hybrid to ace hole No. 15 on June 4, hitting from the silver tees, for her second career hole-in-one. Mike Mullikin, Bob Greer and Teri King witnessed the feat..

David Mittelstadt also aced hole No. 15, using a 7-iron to drive the 126-yard hole from the white tees on June 6. Witnessing his second career was his grandson, and Don and Winnie Palm.

Clallam County Amateur golf tourney slated for July 7-9

Open to all amateur golfers, the 54-hole 2023 Clallam County Amateur Championship will be contested at Peninsula Golf Club, Sunland Golf & Country Club and The Cedars at Dungeness July 7-9.

Entry fees are $180 for the public, $150 for members/employees and includes three rounds of golf, range balls, prizes, raffles, KP, a Friday evening cocktail party and lunch on the final day. Cart fees are not included.

Players also will have shots at a $5,000 hole-in-one prize each day.

PC celebrates student-athletes with awards

Peninsula College Athletics celebrated another successful year, winning all four North Region championships for only the second time in history and handing out annual sports awards to student athletes at a recent event in the Pirate Union Building.

In soccer, the Wally Sigmar Award went to Chiaki Takase, of Kaisei, Japan, a technically-skilled midfielder who helped the Pirates win an NWAC title in 2021 and a region championship this year, and to Tim Deser, of Obing, Germany, also a midfielder who helped the men’s team to back-to-back region championships. The Pirate Gold Award went to two players who are coming back in the fall: redshirt sophomore defender Caneel Corpuz of Hilo, Hawaii, and Maurin Frehner, a midfielder from Zurich, Switzerland.

In basketball, the Art Feiro Award for the women’s team, also winning back-to-back league titles, and the MVP of the North Region, Ituau Tuisaula of Soldotna, Alaska. The men’s Art Feiro Award winner, also the North Region MVP, was Roosevelt Williams Jr. of Perth, Australia.

The Pirate Gold winner for women’s basketball was Port Angeles’ Millie Long, who also was named the NWAC soccer Baden Player of the Year for 2022. Long won four league titles and an NWAC title in her two years wearing black and gold. The men’s Pirate Gold award winner was Mikey Medlock Jr. from Las Vegas, Nev.

In Pirate Esports, the MVP award went to Lily Doten of Port Angeles, who plays Rocket League, and the Inspirational Award went to Savannah Hickman of Sequim, who specializes in Overwatch.
