Four to vie for Clallam County Fair Royalty

Four teens — two from Sequim, one from Port Angeles and another from Forks — are vying for the title of queen and a chance to represent the Clallam County Fair in 2024.

Kaylyn Baerg and Olivia Ostlund of Sequim, Brooklyn McKnight of Port Angeles and Aliya Gillett of Forks are candidates for the fair royalty. Candidates will be in the community seeking donations for the 2024 year.

Royalty Coronation will crown a new court for the 2024 year and is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 27, in the Exposition Building at the Clallam County Fairgrounds, 1608 W. 16th St., Port Angeles. The coronation event is free and open to the public.

The new court will represent the county fair at parades and local events along with court at all four days of the county fair, set for Aug. 15-18, 2024. The 2024 fair theme is “Celebrate The Bounty Of Our County.”

About the candidates

Ostlund is an 18-year-old senior at Sequim High School. Her parents are Bob Ostlund and Jeromy and April Wright. Her sponsor is Caregivers Home Health Inc.

She was a Clallam County Fair princess in 2022-23.

Ostlund is a member of the FFA team at Sequim High and is planning on showing rabbits or goats. She is also an Ambassador in Girl Scouts. She competes in the Port Angeles Youth League and has bowled since she was 3.

Her plans are to study in an auto mechanics program.

Ostlund’s platform is the Boys & Girls Clubs of America.

Baerg is a 14-year-old freshman at Sequim High. Her parents are Jason and Kindle Baerg and her sponsor is Julie Knowles.

Baerg is and Sequim High FFA member in livestock judging. She plays volleyball and basketball, and enjoys snowboarding.

She would like to attend the University of Hawaii and study livestock veterinary science.

Baerg’s platform is cancer awareness, and her hope is to bring awareness to help prevent and treat cancer.

McKnight is a 16-year-old freshman at Port Angeles High School. Her parents are Ken and Stacy McKnight. Her sponsor is Caliber Home Loans (Melanie Pilgrim and Vonnie McKnight).

She is vice president of her freshman class at PAHS. Her school activities include bowling and track and field. She also likes to participate in symphonic choir classes. Her hobbies include writing, drawing and signing.

McKnight said she would like to attend Stanford University.

McKnight’s platform is the Olympic Peninsula Humane Society, and her hope is to bring awareness and education for the benefit of animals.

Gillett is a 16-year-old junior at Forks High School and a Running Start student at Peninsula College. Her parents are Craig and Tracy Gillett. Her sponsors are Chinook Pharmacy and Evergreen 76/Subway. She is active in high school soccer, drama club, band and track and field.

She plans to attend Washington State University to earn a chemical engineering degree so she can find a cure for illnesses such as cancer. Her platform is the Forks Community Food Bank.
