Kathryn Bates is the Congressional liaison, Sixth District Washington State Delegation and is part of the National Legislative Council for the American Legion Department of Washington.
She is collecting facts from veterans who use the VA Healthcare system about procedures that have changed recently.
If you have encountered a change to the VA system that you feel negatively impacts you, please let her know by emailing 1katheybates@gmail.com.
We need to document the negative impacts of laying off VA healthcare workers.
Sarge’s Veteran Support’s annual gala will be held Saturday, Oct. 11 from 5-8 p.m. at 7 Cedars Casino.
This special evening will feature dinner, an auction and the stories of the veterans they serve while supporting the nonprofit’s vital mission to provide shelter and housing for vulnerable veterans throughout the Olympic Peninsula.

Let’s come together to honor our veterans and make a meaningful difference in their lives.
Many, many thanks to all the people — Kathy, Michael, Colleen, those on the Chicklist, and many more — who have sent cases of soup, pot roast, chili, fruit and macaroni and cheese to my house, 538 N. Seventh Ave. in Sequim, for the Emergency Pantry at the Veterans Center. You are helping many veterans and their families who are in need.
I hope you will continue to do this through the winter. We also need canned fruit, Top Ramen and canned vegetables. The Veterans Relief Fund was decreased by $20,000 this year and we are trying to make that up by providing canned food. If you have any concerns or questions please contact me at cdrlgilchrist@gmail.com. Thank you so much!
The Sequim VFW at 169 E. Washington St. is hosting a Veterans Spaghetti Dinner on Saturday, Sept. 20 from 4-6:30 p.m. put on by the Sequim Valley Lions. Veterans eat for free and guests are $5. Children under 5 are free. There will be many raffles throughout for prizes to veterans. The menu is spaghetti, salad, coffee or tea and dessert.
Captain Joseph House Foundation is holding a fundraiser called Dance into Fall on Saturday, Sept. 20 from 5-10 p.m. at the Masonic Lodge, 622 S. Lincoln Street in Port Angeles. Tickets are $50 per person for a barbecue dinner, games, prizes, an auction and the Buck Ellard Band. There will be a contest for best western wear. Call 360-460-7848 with questions. Adults only.
The New Dungeness Chapter, NSDAR, in honor of Constitution Week (Sept. 17 -23) will hold a Bells Across America ceremony on Wednesday, Sept. 17 at 1 p.m. at the Sequim City Hall Plaza. Congress established Constitution Week in 1956. Please bring a bell and join in the ringing!
