Festive Flourishes

The Sequim City Band will perform Festive Flourishes, a free holiday concert, at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 21, in the auditorium at Port Angeles High School, 304 E. Park Ave.

Held on the same day as the winter solstice, the concert will open with Chad Heiny’s “Solstice” and from there bloom outward into a mix of radiant brass, gentle reflection and merry momentum, a release from the Sequim City Band states. Holiday favorites drift in and out, mixed with newer compositions.

Listeners can look forward to one of the great orchestral holiday showpieces: Leroy Anderson’s “A Christmas Festival,” a medley that has long been a crown jewel of seasonal concerts featuring “Joy to the World,” “Deck the Halls,” “Good King Wenceslas,” and more.

Quieter moments will be offered through Morton Lauridsen’s “A Magnum Mysterium,” while Alfred Reed’s arrangement of “Greensleeves” and Frank Ticheli’s “Earth Song” provide space for reflection between bursts of seasonal cheer. For Christmas movie buffs, the music from “Home Alone” brings a touch of whimsy and nostalgia, while a lively Chanukah medley adds another layer of celebration.

The PAHS Band Boosters will host a holiday bake sale in the lobby to raise funds for the Port Angeles High School Band’s upcoming trip to Anaheim.

Christmas Cottage, Bakery-Cafe

The Christmas Cottage/Bakery-Cafe Holiday Bazaar, hosted by the Sequim Guild of Seattle Children’s Hospital, will take place Friday-Sunday, Dec. 12-14, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 81 Timothy Lane in Sequim.

Sip a hot drink, munch a fresh-baked scone and take home Christmas treats from the adjacent Bakery-Café, then shop in the Christmas Cottage for handcrafted holiday items made by Guild members. Compimentary giftwrapping is offered in the cafe.

If you missed the Guild’s 19th Annual Holiday Bazaar, or if you loved the choices there and are looking for more, this is another opportunity to support research and uncompensated care at Children’s Hospital.

Dungeness Christmas Tea

The public is invited to the Old Dungeness Schoolhouse Christmas Tea and Bake Sale, set for 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 13.

The historic building is located at 2781 Towne Road.

Donations support the Old Dungeness Schoolhouse.

Out Loud Story Slam

The story slam is back at Studio Bob in Port Angeles on Friday, Dec. 12 at 7 p.m. The theme for the evening is “Accidents.”

The event will be hosted by Nessa Goldman. Ten storytellers from the audience will be invited to share a five-minute true, personal story on the theme.

Accidents come in all forms — the fender-bender you walked away from, the wrong turn that led you somewhere unforgettable, the spilled coffee that sparked a conversation, or the chance encounter that changed your life. Whether you survived one, witnessed one, or stumbled into something wonderful by accident, there’s a story behind it that the audience will want to hear.

Storytellers are judged by the audience, but the event is all in the spirit of sharing. The idea is that tellers prepare their best stories, and the winners will go on to participate in a future Grand Slam. Audience members can also participate anonymously, or just enjoy the tales of the evening.

Those who think they might like to participate but would like more guidance can email outloudstoryslam@gmail.com.

Doors open at 6:15 p.m., and the show starts at 7 p.m.

Tickets are $12 in advance and are available online at outloudstoryslam.com, and $15 at the door, if available, cash and card accepted. Studio Bob is located at 118 ½ E. Front St.

PenCol to stage play

There are still two more show nights coming up for “Macbeth, or the Curse of the Scottish Play” at Peninsula College’s Little Theater. Performances will be at 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 12, and Saturday, Dec. 13. Tickets are $18 and are available one hour prior at the door.

Anna Johnson Andersen has adapted “Macbeth” into a shorter experience.

“I’ve found that some of Shakespeare’s plays can be simplified into 45 minutes, which is often vastly more enjoyable to today’s audience,” Andersen said. “We’ve done that here, which gave us the opportunity for something truly unique in the first half of the production.”

The first act, written by Andersen, is a comedic take on a rehearsal of the notoriously cursed tragedy. Shakespeare’s story is paraphrased in modern English, giving those who are uncomfortable with the language an insight into what they are about to see. The second act is a performance of the original tragedy, with a diverse group of actors, which include highly experienced community favorites and students from the Drama 101 class at Peninsula College, which Andersen is currently co-teaching with Dr. Lara Starcevich.

“This is a delightful reworking of the Scottish Play for modern audiences,” said student Damajah Heinemann. “It gives context for both the history and significance of Macbeth as well as an inside look to how these plays are still being done today.”
