Sequim’s Devyn Turner was among four students to be named winners of Peninsula College’s Outstanding English Essay Award. The four will be presented with their awards at the college’s board of trustees meeting Thursday, June 11. Turner joins Kim Brisbois, Josie Padgett and Eric Trent with awards.
The awards, now in their fifth year, are given annually as recognition for excellent academic writing by Peninsula College students. Each year, the P.C. English division nominates and votes for the best essays written in English classes during the academic year. The submissions must be essays, not poetry or fiction.
Brisbois won first prize and $200 while Turner, Padgett and Trent tied for second and were awarded $50.
Turner wrote her essay, “Black Mesa Faces of Change,” in a class she took from Kate Reavey and Matt Teorey. Turner grew up in Winslow, Ariz., living there for 14 years before her family moved to Sequim five years ago. She will be transferring to Northern Arizona University this fall and said she would like to thank the English department of Peninsula College for the award and for the services that it provides for its students.
