It’s time to fish … or cut bait

Summer is here. That means it’s time to break out the old fishing pole.

To help introduce youngsters to this great pastime, the North Olympic Peninsula Chapter of the Puget Sound Anglers is sponsoring the ninth annual Kids Fishing Day in Sequim, Saturday, May 21.

Tom Duttrey, a spokesman for the Anglers, called the event a great recreational opportunity for families. He also noted, “A lot of kids have caught their first fish ever” during Kids Fishing Day.

Because the Anglers pick up the tab, the event is free for everyone 14 and under. No fishing license is required.

The event begins at 8 a.m. and runs to 2 p.m. at the City of Sequim’s Water Reclamation Pond and Demonstration Park, just north of Carrie Blake Park on Blake Avenue.

The Anglers are stocking the pond with 1,500 trout, with some up to 10 pounds. A separate pond, just for toddlers, also will be available.

If you have a pole, bring one. Those who don’t have a pole can borrow one from the Anglers. Bait also is supplied by the club.

Club members will be on hand to clean the fish and will teach the young anglers how it’s done.

In 2010, nearly 500 youngsters turned out for the big day.

The Puget Sound Anglers aren’t done on May 21. Two weeks later, they’ll restock the pond with another 1,000 trout, ensuring there are available fish for young anglers throughout the summer.
