DISTRICT

Sequim community members can meet and have discussion with Superintendent Gary Neal at an informal coffee chat from 10-11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 15, at Hurricane Coffee Company, 104 W. Washington St. Coffee chat discussions center on current educational issues. The theme of discussion for the Sept. 15 coffee chat will be the Educational Programs and Operations Levy (EP&O Levy). Opportunity to Excel (OTE), the school district’s after-school program, will begin Sept. 15. Please note that OTE is by teacher invitation. It is every Tuesday and Thursday after school. Limited bus service is available to OTE students. Call the Transportation Department for more information about bus routes at 582-3274.

The next school board meeting is at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 3, in the board room. To view the agenda for this meeting, go to www.sequim.k12.wa.us and click on Board of Directors. There is time set aside at every board meeting for public comments.

Calling all parents wishing to chaperone the River Festival Education Day field trip on Sept. 23! Individuals interested in volunteering in Sequim Schools may fill out an online volunteer application for the 2016-2017 school year at https://sequimvolunteers.hrmplus.net/. The online application process requires an email address and provides step-by-step assistance. A current Washington driver’s license or state ID card is required in order to run a background check. For more information about becoming a registered volunteer, contact volunteer coordinator Patsene Dashiell at mdashiell@sequim.k12.wa.us.

GREYWOLF ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

A reading tutor training session is scheduled for folks interested in becoming volunteer reading tutors at Greywolf from 3:30-4:30 p.m. Sept. 28 in the library. Contact Krista Chatters, reading specialist teacher, at 582-3300 if you have questions.

HELEN HALLER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Teacher and reading specialist Betsy Smith will hold two training sessions, with Part 1 on Sept. 20 and Part 2 on Sept. 27, both sessions from 3:15-4:15 p.m. in the school library. Plan on attending both sessions. If you have questions about the reading tutor program, contact Smith at bsmith@sequim.k12.wa.us.

Three days into their first school week, Olivia Catelli’s kindergarten classroom was bustling with activity in the afternoon, as the young students were engaged in purposeful play. Blake Lawless and Ava Rosey solved problems using blocks in the math center. Abigail Stites and Alice Kite took stock of play food supply in the kitchen.

Sophia Mager and Ben Reeves, with serious expressions on their faces, set up furniture in the doll house center. Kimira Creaer, Johonna Chavez, Alice Kite and Viviane Borgato worked together to tidy up when it was time to prepare for the next activity.

When asked to pause and pose together for a quick photo, they giggled and obliged. Everyone quieted down and sat down when Catelli brought out a book to read aloud and requested they sit “crisscross applesauce.” A few faces sleepy now, but before they knew it, time to stand up, line up to go home!

SEQUIM MIDDLE SCHOOL

A special breakfast for honor roll students is planned for Wednesday, Sept. 14, for students with a last name beginning with L-Z. Breakfast begins at 8:30 a.m. and will be served in the cafeteria. Parents are encouraged to attend with their Honor Roll student.

SEQUIM HIGH SCHOOL

Senior Parent Night is at 6:30 p.m Sept. 19 in the cafeteria. Important information for seniors and dates for upcoming senior events will be presented. We encourage all seniors and their parents to attend and take advantage of this opportunity to begin preparation for graduation on June 9, 2017!

“Sequim’s Got Talent,” the back to school assembly held Sept. 2 in the gym, was full of silly competitions for the purpose of bringing all students together for light-hearted fun, exhibiting school spirit and welcoming the freshmen Class of 2020!
