Greywolf Elementary School kindergartener Emma Simpson, left, and fifth-grader Hailey Onofre find a great way to start each day is to find a quiet place and read, by themselves or with a family member. Some students come to the Early Bird Reader program in the school library only occasionally while others like Onofre and Simpson come almost every day. Over the course of the school year, more than 120 different students participated in the Early Bird Reader program. Photo by Katie Salmon-Newton

SEQUIM HIGH SCHOOL

The Washington State Bike Everywhere Challenge for May 2017 has just finished. Sequim High staff and district students finished on top against other teams in Clallam County and against other schools in Washington. A huge shout-out to team members for a great job and for riding an accumulated total of 2,314 miles for the month! Staff members were Dave Toman (team captain), Carol Harms, Joe Sullivan, Katie Ward, Scott Chichester, Stuart Marcy and Laura Gould. Students were Win Gould, JoNell Hill and Liam (Sky) Barber. “We also had several members place in the top five for overall miles and most days ridden for the month categories. Congratulations again and nice job!” Toman said.

Seniors Michael Larsen and Adrian Klarich recently completed a project for leadership class. Larsen came up with the idea to scrape gum off of the desks in the library. By the end of the project, the pile that Larsen and Klarich had unearthed was impressive, containing gum of a variety of colors, human hair and a nickel. “Thanks to Michael and Adrian for making SHS a better place!” Sean O’Mera, ASB advisor and English teacher, said.
