Ice cream social set at Sequim Prairie Grange

The Sequim Prairie Grange, 290 Macleay Road, hosts an ice cream social from 5-7 p.m. Sunday, July 9. Banana splits or sundaes are $5 each. Proceeds benefit Volunteer Hospice of Clallam County. For more information, call Marie at 683-4599.

Sign up for Scout camp

Young people entering grades 1-5 can join the 2017 Cub Scout Day Camp from Tuesday-Friday, July 18-21. The theme is “Cubs at Sea” and there will usual day camp activities like archery, a BB range and wood crafts. This year’s theme also takes campers on a sea voyage with touch tanks from the marine lab, a visit from the Coast Guard, pirate treasure and more. Learn how to relax

Shelby DePas, ARNP, will present a free WOW! Working on Wellness Forum entitled “Stress and Relaxation, the Yin and the Yang of Life” at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 12, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 S. Blake Ave., Sequim.

DePas is a nurse practitioner and serves as Jamestown Clinic’s diabetes program coordinator. Clinic staff will be available to check your blood pressure. WOW! Working on Wellness is a health education program of Dungeness Valley Health &Wellness Clinic which provides basic urgent care and chronic health care services to uninsured community members.

Newcomers explore Audubon Center

Join the Newcomers’ Club on Tuesday, July 11, for lunch and listen to Jenna Ziogas, the education and volunteer coordinator at the Dungeness River Audubon Center. See what the center has to offer the community, ways to get involved, upcoming events and education programs. The event will be at The Cedars at Dungeness Legends Room in Sequim. Socializing starts at 11:30 a.m. with lunch at noon. Lunch is $19, program only fee is $5. Youth mental health addressed in PA

Peninsula Behavioral Health, 118 E. Eighth St., Port Angeles, is offering Youth Mental Health First Aid Training from 4-8:30 p.m., Wednesday-Thursday, July 12-13. It is designed to teach parents, teachers, school staff, social workers and other caring citizens how to help adolescents experiencing mental health issues, addiction or other crises.

Book sale on Saturday

The Friends of Sequim Library will have its monthly book sale from 10 a.m.- 3 p.m. Saturday, July 8, at the Friends building behind the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave. This month’s special featured items include an extensive selection of Native American history and art, American military, sheet music and a large quantity of movie DVDs. All of the indoor paperbacks are priced at 50 cents unless otherwise marked. Proceeds from the sale benefit children’s and adult programming at the Sequim Library.

NOLT plans annual family picnic

The North Olympic Land Trust will have its annual family potluck picnic from 2-5 p.m. Sunday, July 30, at the Vail residence, 1454 Bagley Creek Road S., Port Angeles. This year local author Charlie Sheldon will be onsite doing readings from his recently released book “Strong Heart,” a fictional tale set in the heart of the North Olympic Peninsula. NOLT will provide a main dish, but encourages you to bring a side dish or dessert, your favorite beverage and a friend. Donations will not be requested at the picnic. Harvest dinner tickets on sale now

Tickets are on sale for the 18th annual Friends of the Fields Harvest Dinner from 5-8 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 17, at the Sunland Country Club, 109 Hilltop Drive, Sequim. This year’s Harvest Dinner theme is “Know the Hands that Feed You.” Tickets are $125 per person or $150 after Sept. 5. Tables seat nine guests. Buy eight tickets and get the ninth one free. Tickets go quickly and won’t be sold at the door. The Clallam County Farmer of the Year will be announced. RSVP to https://northolympic landtrust.org.

Shellfish harvest halted

Effective immediately, in Clallam County, the area between Cape Flattery and the Lyre River is closed to recreational shellfish harvesting. Dungeness Bay is closed to all species; Sequim Bay is closed to butter and varnish clams.

All species means clams (including geoduck), oyster, mussels and other invertebrates such as the moon snail. All areas are closed for the sport harvest of scallops. These closures do not apply to shrimp. Crab meat is not known to contain bio toxins, but the guts can contain unsafe levels.

Burn restrictions now in place in Clallam

Clallam County burn restrictions took effect July 1 and run through Oct. 1, unless conditions warrant an earlier closure. The burn restriction applies to all outdoor burning except recreational cooking fires which are permitted unless further banned by extreme conditions. Recreational fires are limited to 3 feet in diameter and 2 feet in height.

Fires for debris disposal are not legal under any circumstances and are not considered recreational.

If conditions arise, the restrictions may be upgraded to a high fire danger and this will prohibit all outdoor burning which includes recreational fires. The exception is within Olympic National Park and other controlled campgrounds. Contact your local fire district for more information or visit www.clallam.net.

Planning commission to talk shoreline plan

The Clallam County Planning Commission meets at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 5, at the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles. The meeting’s agenda includes a revised review draft of the Clallam County Shoreline Master Program. Call 417-2277 for more information.

Saving yourself class set at Shipley Center

On Friday, July 7, at 1 p.m. the Shipley Center presents “Safety Empower Hour” with Lisa Taylor. Topics to be covered are: Education Can Empower You, Awareness Is Prevention, Embrace Community and Be Prepared.

Taylor has been in law enforcement and security for University of Washington and Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. She has practiced martial arts for over 20 years. She will be making a presentation at the Shipley Center to those interested in personal and community safety. Call the Shipley Center office at 683-6806 to sign up. Free for members, requested $2 donation for non-members.

Lavender Weekend training for volunteers

The City of Sequim and the Sequim-Dungeness Valley Chamber of Commerce are hosting a Sequim Lavender Weekend volunteer training workshop at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, July 13, at the Sequim Civic Center, 152 W. Cedar St. Anyone who volunteers during Sequim Lavender Weekend, July 21-23, or who is curious about everything that is happening during the weekend event is welcome to attend. Wheeler to sign copies of ‘Rainbow Country’

Tim Wheeler, a Sequim High graduate, will be signing his recently released book, “Rainshadow Country,” at the Sequim Museum &Arts, 175 W. Cedar St. from 5-8 p.m. during the First Friday Artwalk on July 7.

He and his wife Joyce will autograph and discuss his book, which will be for sale in the museum bookstore.

The Wheelers, a Sequim Prairie pioneer family, will be donating proceeds from the book toward the building of the museum’s new exhibit area on North Sequim Avenue.

Build a birdhouse

As part of the North Olympic Library System’s annual Summer Reading Program, children and families are invited to build birdhouses. Staff from The Home Depot will lead a hands-on building workshop and participants will take home a completed birdhouse. In Sequim and Port Angeles, Dungeness River Audubon Center staff will talk about local birds that might take residence in the houses. The Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave., will host the program at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 11, and the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St., will host the program at 2 p.m. Thursday, July 20.

Senior menu set

Sequim Senior Nutrition Site menus are served at 4:30 p.m. at the Shipley Center, 921 E. Hammond St., on Tuesdays-Fridays. Suggested donation is $5 (60 and over), $8 guest and a 24-hour advance reservation is needed. RSVP to 683-8491. Menus are subject to change.
