Sequim man gets 5-year sentence for child rape

A 19-year-old Sequim man was sentenced to five years in prison following his Aug. 31 conviction for child rape and molestation.

Dylan Scott Valin committed sexual acts with a 13-year-old girl between December 2010 and February 2011 while living at her Sequim home, the jury found.

He was convicted of three counts of third-degree child rape and two counts of third-degree child molestation, all Class C felonies.

Judge George Wood sentenced Valin to the statutory maximum of 60 months confinement and 36 months community custody, as recommended by a pre-sentencing investigation.

Valin was charged with three counts of second-degree child rape, two counts of second-degree child molestation and one count of third-degree child rape following his February arrest but the jury found him guilty of lesser charges. The charges involved a 13-year-old girl and a 14-year-old girl.

In a separate case involving another 13-year-old girl, Valin was charged with cyber stalking and harassment. According to a probable cause statement by Sequim police, the girl reported Valin was harassing her via text messages Feb. 7. She told police she dated Valin for a month but recently had broken up with him over his verbally abusive behavior, police said.

Police said examination of the text messages resulted in a 34-page document with multiple messages threatening to have another girl beat her up if she did not answer his phone calls.

The Clallam County Prosecutor’s Office dropped the cyber stalking and harassment charges.

In addition to the prison sentence, Valin is prohibited from going to any schools, skate parks or playgrounds, or from having contact with girls between the ages of 12 and 18, except for immediate family members.
