Girls tennis: SHS nets big win versus Kingston

Sequim’s girls tennis squad passed its first major test of the season with a 5-2 win over Kingston on March 22, part of a full week of action that saw the Wolves win all three Olympic League matches.
Sequim started the week with a 5-2 win at Bremerton on March 20. Kalli Wiker had Sequim’s lone singles victory, a 6-3, 3-6, 6-0 victory over Jasmine Palaganas. Isabelle Hugonoit and Jessica Dietzman picked up a win in No. 1 doubles play, topping Simone Cantal and Cinthia Reyes 6-0, 6-1, while Amanda He and Olivia Preston won in No. 2 doubles action. Emily Bundy and Tea Gauthun won in straight sets at No. 3 doubles while Eden Johnson and Arlene Law did the same in No. 4 doubles play.
Darija Maric and Emily Nguyen earned singles wins for Bremerton, topping Sequim’s McKenna Hastings and Ashley Rosales in straight sets.
On March 21, Sequim dropped a couple of singles matches but won in straight sets in four doubles matches and the remaining singles match for a 5-2 home win against North Mason.
Johnson picked up a win in No. 3 singles play, topping Kaylie Green 6-4, 6-2. Hugonoit and Wiker combined to knock off Terri Johnson and Astrid Lundberg in No. 1 doubles play (6-0, 6-3), while Sequim teammates Hastings and Rosales won in No. 2 doubles, sweeping Izzy Alverts and Elmira Morozova 6-0, 6-1. He and Preston didn’t give up a point in winning in No. 3 doubles play while Bundy and Law did the same in No. 4 doubles action.
Against Kingston on March 22 — Sequim’s third match in as many days — the Wolves won two of three singles matches and three of four doubles matches for the victory. Hogonoit outlasted the Bucs’ Montana Thoroughman 6-1, 6-7 (3-7), 10-7 in No. 1 singles play while Preston swept Sanni Wilder, 6-0 and 6-2.
Dietzman and Wiker needed three sets to top Kingston’s Lily Beaulieu and Emily Shaleen (2-6, 6-2, 6-4) in No. 1 doubles play. Hastings and Rosales won in straight sets (6-4, 6-4) over Kingston’s Elizabeth Ramirez and Sam Young, while Johnson and Law added a win in No. 4 doubles, topping Cierra Franklin and Racael Winn 6-3, 5-7, 10-7.
Looking ahead
Sequim (4-0 in league play and overall) was scheduled to play at Port Angeles on March 26 — results were not available for this section at press time.
The Wolves are at Klahowya on March 28. They return from spring break to host Chimacum on April 9 before playing at league powerhouse North Kitsap on April 11.
