Sequim Police warning residents of local scams

Published 1:30 am Wednesday, May 23, 2018

The Sequim Police Department is warning of two common scams that have been reported.

The first is where someone is setting up PayPal accounts in the victim’s name and sending test packages to the victim that they did not order. Then the suspect buys products on the false account running up a bill and never paying. The victim is notified by a collection agency for PayPal.

Those who believe they are a victim of this scam are encouraged to contact PayPal directly, notify one’s bank of the potential fraud and notify the Sequim Police Department at 360-683-7227.

The second scam is when the victim receives a call from someone pretending to be an attorney or law enforcement officer. They then tell the victim their grandchild or other family member is in jail.

The suspect requests cash payment of about $7,000 to $8,000.

Those who receive this kind of call are encouraged to hang up and report the call to the Sequim Police Department.
