GREYWOLF ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

First-grade students in Melissa Withrow’s class had been working feverishly to prepare Leprechaun traps in time for St. Patrick’s Day. This STEM project has required the class to work through all the steps of an engineering and design process. This means they have defined the problem, brainstormed solutions, designed a trap on paper, built/tested/redesigned projects and shared their awesome final outcome with their classmates. The very last step was to set their traps up before the end of school in time for St. Patrick’s Day.

The class also worked collaboratively to write a quote describing their experience: “All of us worked very hard on this STEM project. We used our brains and it was difficult, but it worked.”

Each Tuesday is Writer’s Workshop in Bethanie Robbins’ kindergarten specialist class. Last week students in all five kindergarten classes completed narratives about what they would do “If They Ruled The School.” This project involved learning about the elements of a narrative, working in a small group, drafting and publishing. The published stories were made into a nifty story crown the students could wear home for all to read!
