Winterfest! kicks off peninsula snow season

Looking for the start of the snow sports season on the Olympic Peninsula? Don’t look toward the mountains.

The annual Winterfest! event marks the true start of the season, getting snowboarders and skiers and snowshoers amped up and hoping for snowfall.

This year’s event, slated for a 5 p.m. start on Friday, Nov. 19, is, as in past years, a fundraising event for the Hurricane Ridge Winter Sports Education Foundation.

After appetizers and libations, a prime rib dinner sponsored by Bruch and Bruch, a silent auction and live auction, Winterfest! presents “Light the Wick,” a new winter sports movie produced by Teton Gravity Research.

“Light the Wick” captures athletes skiing and snowboarding in various locations stateside and abroad, including a 3-D segment shot at Stevens Pass.

Presale tickets are $40 and there will be a limited number of tickets available at the door for $45.

The film shows the next evening as well, for a $10 at-the-door ticket.

This year the foundation and peninsula snow lovers are celebrating the road being open daily for access all winter long.

The Hurricane Ridge Winter Sports Club operates the lifts at Hurricane Ridge. Members are volunteers who put time into keeping the ski and snowboard area open for the community. Fundraising efforts help keep the rope tows and poma lift running and the club offers scholarships to students who would like to learn to ski or snowboard.
