With a pair of close wins over two upset-minded league foes last week, Sequim’s Wolves assured themselves of a spot in the West Central District playoffs.
Sequim looked like they were on their way to an easy road win on April 24, but a big inning put Bremerton in the mind to upset the Wolves. In the end, however, Sequim’s bats came through in a 15-9 win over the Knights.
Silas Thomas went 2-for-4 with a double, three RBIs and three runs scored, Michael Young had three hits, Austin Newton, Hayden Eaton and Kyler Rollness had two hits each and Joey Oliver had three of Sequim’s 12 steals in the league win.
Newton and Caleb Pozernick each drove in three runs and Eaton was on base five times, including three walks.
Starter Johnnie Young had a shutout through three innings as Sequim built an 8-0 lead before Bremerton plated seven runs in a wild fourth inning. Sequim came back with two runs in the sixth and five in the seventh.
Johnnie Young finished with seven strikeouts. Thomas came on in relief to throw three-and-a-third innings, giving up two runs.
Beating the Bucs
A Kingston squad struggling to earn their first league win nearly got it, but Sequim prevailed in a 10-8 win on April 26 in Sequim.
The Wolves scored nine runs in the first four innings and held on for the win despite being out-hit 8-7.
Thomas had another big game for the Wolves, going 2-for-3 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Eaton had a double and two RBIs, and Michael Grubb scored three times in the win.
After giving up four first inning runs — just one was earned — Michael Young settled down to strike out six and walk one over three innings for the win. Eaton worked two innings and struck out five, while Brandon Barnett and Oliver closed out the game with two shutout innings.
Wolves top Trojans
Down by a run, Sequim got a late-game rally to knock off the host Olympic Trojans 5-2 on April 29, the Wolves’ final regular season game.
Johnnie Young, who went 3-for-3 with two RBIs, pitched a complete game, striking out five while giving up six hits and a walk. Newton added two hits in the win.
Looking ahead
With a top-four finish in the league, Sequim earned a berth in the West Central District 2A tournament set for May 4, 8 and 11. Sequim opens tourney play against either the South Puget Sound League’s No. 4 or No. 6 seed at Franklin Pierce High School in Tacoma on May 4. Following district games are played at Franklin Pierce High or the Kitsap County Fairgrounds in Silverdale. Six of the 12 district qualifiers advance to the state 2A tournament.
