P.E.O. Chapter HZ in Sequim didn’t let the COVID-19 pandemic keep the group from showing support for a pair of Centurion members (ages 100 or older) recently — delivering a daisy cup cake, flowers, candy kisses, cards, banners and horns in drive-by processions.
“These ladies are so special to us and we are sure they know it,” members said in a statement last week.
Mary S. “Mickey” Dickey turned 100 years old on May 9. Thirteen fellow Chapter HZ members gathered together and decorated their cars to parade by her home, while Dickey held a “Thank you” sign in her garage. She also gave an interview to KSQM-FM 91.5 FM and enjoyed Elvis tunes.
Dickey was born in Waurika, Okla., and grew up in Oklahoma, Colorado and Texas. She was an elementary teacher in Alaska but she is especially known for her education in “clown” school: she was a member of a clown group in Sequim and gave a presentation to her chapter on how to put on her clown makeup. She has been a P.E.O. sister since 1995.
Evelyn “Evie” Pilgrim turned 102 on June 17. Once again, 13 members of Chapter HZ lined up their decorated cars and surprised the birthday girl as a surprise. Pilgrim had her two sons present and a daughter-in-law on hand to help celebrate.
Pilgrim grew up in Morgan Hill, Calif. and has a four-year degree from San Jose State University. She held many volunteer jobs including church-, school- and community-related. She has traveled extensively and has visited more than 40 countries.
Pilgrim continues to play cards with her friends and until recently was a tai chi enthusiast. She was initiated into Chapter T in Massachusetts on Feb. 13, 1960. She has held P.E.O offices as Alabama state treasurer, corresponding secretary, recording secretary, organizer and in other chapters as president, vice president, recording secretary and chaplain. She was guard for Chapter HZ. Her motto is, “Sisters never say no.”
Chapter HZ has 24 members, with about 18 attending the bi-monthly meetings. Club members describe the group as “a small vibrant club focused on caring and supporting each other.”
